Training For Adventure Racing & The Qualities Which Are Seen

By Rob Sutter

Training for adventure racing is something that I'd like to put some focus on because I think that there are qualities worth talking about. When you're talking about such qualities, I think that the idea of effort should be seen more than any other. Competitors want to be at their peak conditions so that they will be able to work hard alongside a number of others. When talking about the aforementioned qualities, though, which ones can prove to have the most fruitful results in the long run?

Endurance is perhaps one of the most important factors to talk about when the subject of these kinds of races comes to mind. These races will prove a number of things, such as just how well someone utilizes the energy that they have. For those who think that utilizing all the energy in one go is going to be the best course of action, you are going to be left disappointed, to put it mildly. You have to be able to use it in the best ways imaginable.

When talking about the usage of such energy, make sure that you are able to conserve. I'm sure a number of you remember the story about the tortoise and the hare as they raced one another. While the tortoise took his time to move from one place to another, being able to maintain the pace it has performed at, no matter how slow. The hare moved too quickly and rested, which are ultimately his downfall. As trivial a fable as this may seem, I like to think it is pretty fitting.

I think that training for adventure racing, more than anything, helps people become aware of whom they are in terms of physicality. People have to understand their own limits so that they can tailor the way that they operate around that. Some people will say that constantly pushing oneself without any downtime is the best way to go but it can easily result in people becoming too fatigued to work. Make sure that you understand this for events the likes of Spartan Race, if they are on the horizon.

I believe that these events can be stellar when it comes to teaching people about who they are. They want to know if they are strong and training for adventure racing can be the ideal prelude. When the actual racing occurs, though, the senses that were utilized beforehand have to be kicked to even higher levels than before. Whether it's energy usage, sheer drive, or what have you, these races stand a great chance of defining those who take it upon themselves to compete within them.
