San Fran Tops Denver As New Broncos' QB Orton Struggles

New Denver starting QB Kyle Orton, who was acquired from Chicago in the off-season, threw interceptions on each of his first three offensive series. San Francisco's offense didn't exactly light up the scoreboard, but it did do enough to eke out a 17-16 NFL preseason victory before their home fans.

The good news for Orton is that despite his three interceptions and a solid backup performance by Chris Simms. Broncos coach Josh McDaniels has been steadfast in his support. Orton appeared thankful of this fact in his postgame comments:

"That's great. That's certainly what you need in this league is the support of your coach. I'm not worried about it. I've got a lot of confidence in myself. I think my team has a lot of confidence in me. ... I don't want to make those decisions and throw three interceptions."

Its been a rough start to Ortons tenure in Denver"he was even booed during a public scrimmage after throwing an interception.

McDaniels put Orton's struggles and the loss into perspective:

"I feel very confident in where we're at. There's no reason to start tailspinning into this and that when we've only had one preseason game."

San Franciscos rapidly improving defense made life miserable for Orton all afternoon. Even when he got decent pass protection, they were able to disrupt the passing lanes. Niners' cornerback Nate Clemens in particular was a huge factor, hauling in one of Ortons three miscues. After the game he commented on the play:

"I saw the route and played my responsibility and he threw it. I like seeing all of our defensive backs get interceptions and just making plays because we're game breakers."

The Niners have yet to name a starting quarterback with both Shaun Hill and Alex Smith under consideration. Hill spoke of his first preseason action:

"We were able to move the ball and we had a big conversion on third down. That last sack kind of hurt us. That was completely on me. The offensive line did a great job out there. So I'd like to have that play back and I feel like we could have gotten seven out of that."

Smith was just excited to be back on the field after missing the entire 2008 season due to injury:

"Obviously, I was raring to go when I got out there. It's been a long time for me, so I was pretty amped up."

Denver will head to the Pacific Northwest for a game against the Seattle Seahawks next Saturday night. San Francisco, meanwhile, will host their local rivals the Oakland Raiders. The Broncos open the NFL regular season on Sunday, September 13th against the Bengals at Cincinnati. San Francisco will get the regular season underway on the same day as they head to Tempe, Arizona to face the Arizona Cardinals.

If you are reading into this article, than you are likely looking to learn a little more about one of the greatest films to be released in the year 2000, "Memento". This film has several different reasons for being as good as it was, and many of these will be discussed within this article, along with a detailed plot synopsis.

There are several things to understand and learn when it comes to fully appreciating a film like this. The best way that anyone can really learn about almost any film is through reading a brief plot synopsis to give them the most important parts of the plot. The trouble with this movie and that plan is, this movie does not follow a normal chronological order.

Unless of course, you do so in what chronological order you yourself can pull from the film. In its pieces and parts, the film could be in a very logical order, when you rearrange the parts. There is a very good reason for the film to be out of whack like this, not just for the confusion of the audience. It is actually the whole essence of the film, just having the movie go in a non-sequential order like this.

The reason, is that the main character of the piece, Leonard Shelby, suffers from anterograde amnesia. This is a condition that allows you to keep all the memories that you have up until the time you get it, but you cannot create new memories from then after. He got the condition from receiving a blow to the head when he attempted to stop two men from raping and killing his wife. He managed to kill one of the two, while the other clubbed him in the head. This blow caused the amnesia.

He is rather taken advantage of in his condition, as several people have allowed him to do their dirty work, giving him ammunition in saying that they had something to do with the killing of his wife. Important information that he collects that is relative to the case is tattooed onto his body, so that he does not forget them.

It isn't long into the story that Lenny gets a call from a guy claiming to be a police officer (later to call himself Teddy) who has information about the whereabouts of the second killer. Lenny believes him and soon he is in route to meet this Jimmy, a slummy drug dealer. Turns out, after Lenny kills him, we learn that he had nothing to do with Lenny's wife's murder.

You meet several people throughout the story, and they all play an intricate role into the very complicated nature of this plot. In the last sections of the film, you deduce along with Leonard who the second killer is, and you accompany him to exact his revenge. Though the film was written very well, you might care to take note of the incredible performances from Guy Pearce (Leonard) and Joe Pantaliano (Teddy).

If you aren't careful, "Memento" could lose you to its sporadic jumping back and forth in how the story progresses. But if you are paying attention, you are likely to see one of the best films to have been released in all of 2000, and likely one of the best of the whole '00s.

Buffalo Uses Offense To Run Past Tampa Bay

It wasn't a game for the ages by the Buffalo Bills, as they blew much of a 17 point lead to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Still, they did what they had to do and put some offense on the board en route to a 33-20 National Football League victory. The Bills shot out to a 17-0 first quarter lead before Tampa Bay answered with 14 of their own in the second quarter. After a scoreless third quarter they outscored Tampa 13-6 in the final stanza to seal the win.

NFL sports betting enthusiasts who took the Bills as -4 home favorites cashed their tickets with the pointspread cover. Despite a 1-1 straight up record, Buffalo improved to 2-0 against the spread. Tampa Bay has lost both of their 2009 NFL games straight up and against the number for a 0-2 mark in both categories. The combined 53 points put on the scoreboard went OVER the posted total of 41. Both teams have gone OVER in two games this so far this season.

Terrell Owens capped the game with a long touchdown reception in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Trent Edwards expressed his excitement and seeing his team's new deep threat:

I was excited and he was excited. I don't really recall what was said, but I'm honestly hoping that that continues to happen. I think that's why we have him."

Lee Evans also caught a touchdown pass from Edwards, and after the game praised his quarterback:

"It comes down to opportunities. I think Trent wasn't afraid to take any chances. You always have to have that threat of the deep play. I think we put it on the table today that we would."

A team long known for its suffocating defenses, Tampa Bay has struggled to stop opposing offenses in the first two NFL regular season games under new head coach Raheem Morris. The Bucs allowed over 900 yards of offense this season, a fact that defensive stalwart Ronde Barber stressed was unacceptable:

"They dialed up some things on us that we should have stopped but we didn't. Ask the coaches that. I'm not willing to make a statement on that. It's really unacceptable. Good defenses are good tackling defenses."

Morris, meanwhile, tried to project an aura of calm:

"I'm not worried about their confidence but these guys got to play better."

The Bills now host the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, with Buffalo installed as +6 home underdogs. The total for the game has been set at 52. Buffalo will travel to Miami the following Sunday to play the Dolphins before returning home on 10/11 to take on the Cleveland Browns. Tampa Bay faces three tough NFC East opponents in the coming weeks, beginning with a Sunday home game against the New York Giants. The Bucs are +6 home underdogs in that game with the total set at 44.

Miami Beats Bucs To Remain Undefeated In NFL Preseason Play

Success in the NFL mandates that even when teams aren't playing their best they need to find a way to win. The Miami Dolphins found a way to win ugly in their NFL preseason battle of Florida on Thursday night. After spotting the Bucs a 6-0 lead, Miami used a late first half field goal and scored the only touchdown of the second half to comeback for the 10-6 win.

A starting QB battle in Tampa was the biggest storyline of the game and veteran Byron Leftwich appears to have gained the edge over Luke McCown. Bucs coach Raheem Morris has indicated that hell be making a decision soon, though he gave little indication as to his preference in postgame comments:

"Obviously you want somebody to jump up and take it. We'll find out when we go back, look at the tape and evaluate this thing."

McCown had a rough night and after the game gave a verbose no comment on his status as starter:

"It's not for me to say. ... My part in it is preparing every day, being the best I can be and getting better from my mistakes. As long as I feel like I'm doing that, then I'm OK."

Leftwich, meanwhile, was 9 of 17 for 100 yards and came up big on several third down completions. He had very little to say after the game:

"Hopefully, I'm the guy. I felt good. I missed a few, but I hit a few also. Luckily for me on the ones I missed, I made plays on the following play to get those first downs."

Bucs running back Cadillac Williams returned to action after major knee surgery seven months ago. Hes been limited in the last three seasons due to injuries, but looked solid in picking up 54 yards on eight carries. Afterwards, he said the knee problems are not an issue:

"The knee is not an issue to me. ... I feel great. I'm just loving what I do."

Dolphins QB Chad Pennington said that its hard to take much away from a strange game like this one:

"It was a very odd game for us, as far as the rain delay, a lot of stoppages of play and things like that We were able to come out get a score before halftime and get a score after the half. We'll build on that. We'll be critical of ourselves and make sure we don't let a win overshadow what we need to do to get better."

Miami will get the NFL regular season underway against the Atlanta Falcons at The Georgia Dome on Sunday, September 13. Tampa Bay will welcome the Dallas Cowboys to The Cigar City on the same day to kick off their 2009 campaign.

New Things Are Happening At Ole Miss Rebels Fall Camp This Year

Last week marked the start of Ole Miss Rebels journey leading to the 2010 football conference games. The activities in the camp are visible to outsiders from a distance and no remote communication devices are allowed. The team starts off with some days of warm-up practices. On Thursday, August 12, they wear their full equipment. Some new developments have happened.

Former Offense Coordinator Kent Austin left in the early part of this year to fill his post as head coach of Cornell University. In his stead, Coach Houston Nutt has hired Dave Rader, a person with coaching extensive coaching experience. He is now both co-offensive coordinator and coach of the quarterbacks.

The 52-year-old Rader was occupied as a businessman when Nutt approached him. He has accumulated 9 years in the position of assistant coach. He has also 12 years of experience as head coach. This year will be his fourth time in the Southeastern Conference. His last job in football was from 2003- 2006 as a member of coach Mike Shula's staff who was them coaching Alabama. Rader is a mechanical engineering graduate of Tulsa U whom he played for as starting quarterback. He was made an inductee into the Independence Bowl Hall of Fame in 1999. Currently, Rader shares his position with fellow offensive coordinator Mike Markuson.

It came as a surprise to everyone when, just before fall camp opened, it was announced that "Tig" Barksdale, the 2007 Mr. Football, had been terminated from the team. Earlier, Barksdale had been arrested for DUI and driving without a license. Then, last spring he committed a "violation of team rules" and was suspended. This time around, no reason was given for his dismissal other than that he was pressed to see to some personal issues.

The opening of Ole Miss fall camp saw about 400 people attending just to get a glimpse of the controversial Jeremiah Masoli who was earlier with the University of Oregon. During his stint there he received six football awards. Among these awards are the 2008 Holiday Bowl Most Valuable Player, the College Football Performance Awards of 2009 for Elite National and QB Performer and the College Football Performance Awards of 2009 for Midseason Favorite.

After having received 5 of his awards in 2009, Masoli went on to commit a series of demeanor's in the following year. In January, 2010 he was charged with second-degree burglary and consequently suspended from the team for the entire year. When, in June, he followed up with drug and traffic related offenses, he left the team management no choice but to terminate him.

Coach Nutt has made it clear that under no circumstances is he going to tolerate any misbehavior from Masoli. However, if he keeps out of trouble while with the Rebels and gives a performance equal to his 2009 achievement with Oregon, he can continue playing with the Rebels for the entire season.

The fact that coach Nutt accepted Masoli may mean that he intends his players to learn something from Masoli before the guy graduates. The guy's days with the Rebels are numbered since he only has one more season of play left to him.

Some junior players who did well in the spring games may be given key positions in this year's games. These are Damien Jackson, Wayne Dorsey and Randall Mackey.

Houston Beats Kansas City In Rainy NFL Preseason Contest

It was the sort of sloppy NFL preseason game that made the coaches more interested in escaping with as few injuries as possible than with winning or evaluating talent. In a driving rainstorm at Arrowhead Stadium the Houston Texans outlasted the Kansas City Chiefs to take a 16-10 NFL exhibition victory. It was the first game of the NFL preseason for both teams, and they were more or less happy to emerge unscathed from the deluge though Houston did suffer a potentially significant injury to their backup QB.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak summed up the teams mindset in such awful weather conditions:

"It was a very sloppy night weather-wise and whoever plays the best defense and whoever doesn't put it on the ground usually finds a way to win in this league. I was glad we did, but we paid a price. We have some guys banged up and that usually happens when you get out there in a mess like that."

The biggest name to suffer an injury was Houston backup QB Rex Grossman. Kubiak gave an early assessment of his condition:

"It looks like he has a pretty good hamstring. The first play when he went in he booted and said he felt his hamstring pull or pop, or whatever. So we'll have to wait and see."

Texans running back Ryan Moats was happy about just having some actual opposition:

"It felt good to finally hit somebody else for a change and not worry about hurting anybody else."

Texans starting QB Matt Schaub was generally pleased with his first performance of the NFL preseason:

"We ran the ball effectively down in the red zone and we were able to finish that drive 95 yards for a touchdown. That's the way you want to finish off your day."

Kansas Citys head coach Todd Haley made his NFL coaching debut, and spoke of the experience in his postgame comments:

"It's your first game as head coach and I know it's just preseason, but it was an exciting, exciting moment for me. If you tell me the first real one's a win, I'll take this loss any day of the week. It's a special feeling when it's your team and a lot of responsibility comes with that and I didn't live up to my end of that. That's the part that's got to change."

Houstons NFL preseason campaign continues on Saturday as they host the New Orleans Saints. Kansas City will play against the Vikings at Minnesota on Friday night.

Lakers Retain Services Of Free Agent Lamar Odom

After a month long free agency soap opera, both Lamar Odom and the Los Angeles Lakers got what they really wanted all along. The Lakers retained the services of their valuable sixth man, and Odom will return to the team after an intense recruiting pitch from the Miami Heat. On Friday, Odom officially signed his new contract with the NBA Champions thus insuring that the nucleus of the roster will remain intact.

Terms of the deal weren't immediately released, but both player and team appeared relieved that things had worked out. In early July, negotiations broke down after some miscommunication between Odom's agent and Lakers' owner Dr. Jerry Buss. While Odom worked to mend fences--including several personal phone calls to Dr. Buss--his agent was receiving interest from a number of teams. Miami, in particular, was extremely interest bringing out some heavy hitters including Dwayne Wade and Pat Riley to make a recruiting pitch.

Ultimately, however, Odom couldnt come up with a compelling reason to leave his situation in Los Angeles. At the official signing ceremony, he hinted that a dynasty could be in the making:

"I guess basketball-wise, I feel complete. I want to feel it again. It's kind of an overwhelming feeling. I get goose bumps when I think about it, and as long as I continue to play professional basketball, I want to always feel that. The way I feel during the summer, I always want to feel that. If we can win six, seven, eight, nine, 10 championships in a row, I want to experience that."

The only significant loss to last years NBA title winning team was Trevor Ariza, but the teams signing of Ron Artest is likely an upgrade. Artest brings not only his infamous swagger and intensity, but an element of toughness and versatility that Ariza lacked. Such was Odoms commitment to the Lakers is that even during his free agency, he helped recruit Artest to sign with the team:

"I spoke to Ron two days before he signed, and I told him how important I think it is for him to come here. Because I know how hard he works, he needs to experience basketball at its best, at the highest level, and he needs to become a Laker. Two days after that, he signed."

Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak was understandably elated at Odom's return:

"Three or four months ago, I didn't think it could be possible that we could basically bring this team back in whole. Lamar had a wonderful season that ended on the best possible note you could have, and Lamar had a lot of options. ... Here it is, July 31, and we have brought back everybody that we wanted to bring back."

Odom noted that Los Angeles was home to his family, and he never really wanted to play elsewhere:

"I didn't want my kids to have to change schools -- just the little things. I'm comfortable here. I've been here since I was' years old. I'm proud to be playing for what I think is the most popular brand in sports.

Hasselbeck completed 16 passes in 23 attempts including two touchdowns, though he was sacked three times. That was a big concern as he missed considerable time last season due to a back injury, but appeared to suffer no ill effects here. Still, the Seahawks starting QB said it was a traumatic experience:

"It's just like I remembered- no fun. ... I forgot how hard people hit in here. It's just like a car accident. It's part of the game ... and it was probably good that it happened."

After a rough opening weekend as the Denver Broncos starting QB, Kyle Orton recovered to post decent numbers. He completed 16 of his first 19 pass attempts including a touchdown before finishing 18 of 26 for 182 yards with a touchdown and an interception:

"I've got an awful lot of confidence right now, I really do. This is the best offense I've ever played with. This is the best talent around me that I've ever had. I just feel that my game right now is as good as it has ever been.

Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels was more reserved in his assessment:

"I think he acquitted himself fairly well. He played, you know, fairly well. There's still obviously room for improvement. But he did what we feel he is capable of doing.

It would have been hard for Orton to have played worse than he did in the Broncos opening NFL preseason contest against the San Francisco 49ers last week, with three interceptions in his first three drives.

Seattle will get the NFL regular season off and running on Sunday, September 13th as they host the St. Louis Rams. The Broncos will travel to Cincinnati for a game against the Bengals on the opening Sunday of the regular season.

The reason they are trying to find Private Ryan is because his other three brothers in the Army had all been killed in action and the Army felt that he deserved to go home to his family. Needless to say, the company is divided on whether or not this is actually worth all the trouble to find Ryan, let alone watch him get a ticket home.

You get to know each and every one of the men in the company through various conversations that they have about their lives before the war, and their plans for when the war is finally over. When they reach Ryan and deliver the news, he still insists he remains at his post long enough to hold a key bridge in Allied control. He refuses to leave the company that he is with until he knows this key bridge is secure and not able to be used by the Germans.

This is an accurate depiction of all of the emotions and feelings that are relative to being at war. You are crying when the men are crying, you are scared when they are, and you celebrate when they do. This is an instant classic that everyone should see if they get a chance to, if nothing else for the incredible performances by Matt Damon (Ryan), Tom Hanks (Miller) and Tom Sizemore (Sgt. Mike Horvath).

A Good Review Of Its A Wonderful Life

Amongst all the great Christmas films ever made, Its a Wonderful Life is, without a doubt, the very best of them, and Frank Capra's best film, period. All of his films portrayed his positive, life affirming philosophy towards the world, but this film defined that philosophy, and while it has had more than half a century's worth of competition, it still stands as the greatest Christmas film ever made.

Yes, yes, the nostalgic, inner child in you wants to say A Christmas Story is the greatest holiday film, or maybe How The Grinch Stole Christmas. The cynic in you chortles and says "No, Die Hard and Lethal Weapon are the best Christmas movies, LOL!" But no, sorry, this film is the greatest holiday film of all time, with Miracle on 34th Street being a distant second.

The film deals with the darker side of the holidays, the depression, the self pity, the nihilism, despair and disappointment that so few filmmakers have the courage to address. In fact, the second act begins with Jimmy Stewart, the warmest and most friendly actor in history, attempting suicide! To start from such an incredibly low point takes confidence.

Capra starts Stewart's George Bailey at such an incredibly low, sad, dark point that it is truly heroic and triumphant to watch him climb from there. Any director can keep it positive by just never facing the hero with any challenge, but Bailey is beset on all sides by the tyranny of evil men, he's put up against the world and told to make it alone. He starts low and ends on a high note.

The film ranks with Rocky as the greatest Happy Tears movies of all time. If you're not crying by the time the film ends then... You probably weren't actually watching the film! Put down your Nintendo DS or crossword puzzles for just a couple hours and actually watch the film! It is a triumphant display of how optimism and hope always trump negativity.

Interestingly, the film was a flop on release. The director had always been a popular, money-making film maker, but for some reason, this one just didn't grab the movie-going audience. Of course, the movie has since become one of the most successful of all time on video, DVD, second runs and, of course, cable, but at the time, it almost sank Capra's career.

One more interesting point: They say that Stewart was Capra's only choice for the role of George Bailey, but that's not true! In fact, his "only choice" was Henry Fonda, but Stewart was a second choice, when push came to shove. We can say Fonda would have been great in the role, but it's hard to imagine anyone but Stewart playing the character to such perfection.

There were a number of alternative endings considered, but none of them would have been as satisfying as the way the story wraps up in the film... Except maybe the Saturday Night Live sketch where Bailey leads the whole town to Potter's house to give him a comeuppance... Interestingly, this ending, while a spoof, was nearly the same as an alternative ending that was actually filmed!

UFC Flashback: Lauzon Vs. Stephens Headlines Ultimate Fight Night

Ever since he burst onto the MMA scene with a shocking first round KO upset of Jens Pulver at UFC 63, Joe Lauzon has been working to earn respect. For some reason hes had trouble being taken seriously as a top contender in the UFCs lightweight division. He may not fit the classical profile of a fighter, looking more like a fresh faced kid and is often referred to as a geek due to his educational background in computer science. In the main event at the UFC Ultimate Fight Night in Tampa, Lauzon withstood a game challenge from late replacement Jeremy Stephens to earn a 2nd round submission victory.

Lauzon was in control of the fight throughout, but Stephens gave a good account of himself despite his opponents obvious technical superiority on the ground. Stephens wasn't able to match up with Lauzon's ever improving BJJ skills, but he used good old fashioned tenacity and some powerful punching to keep the fight competitive throughout. Lauzon appeared to be on the verge of ending the fight midway through the second with a ground and pound assault that he attempted to transition into a rear naked choke. Stephens fought back with a vengeance despite his disadvantageous position and opened a nasty cut on Lauzon's forehead with an elbow strike.

Lauzon gained a new sense of urgency not wanting to lose on a stoppage due to the cut. He regained control on the ground and from full mount twisted into a nasty arm bar. Stephens tried to extricate himself, but was eventually forced to tap giving the bloody Lauzon a hard fought triumph.

The semifinal matchup featured another impressive effort from Cain Velasquez, who many have pegged as the heavyweight superstar of the future. Velasquez is a formidable physical presence at 6'2" 241 pounds, and has very well developed technical skills for a fighter with only five bouts under his belt.

Velasquez was never really threatened in the fight, but he did have difficulty finishing off tough UFC newcomer Dennis Stojnic. Stojnic displayed impressive toughness and a chin of granite as he became the first of Velasquez's opponents to make it into the second round.

In the second round, Velasquez quickly caught his opponent and sent him to the canvas with a nice combination which he followed up with another ground and pound attack. Stojnic again kept trying to defend himself despite a hellacious beating, though the referee finally jumped in and stopped the contest awarding Velasquez the TKO verdict. While Velasquez continues to show all of the qualities of a future top heavyweight, he needs to improve his stopping power and ability to finish a fight.

On the undercard, Josh The Dentist Neer earned a tapout victory over the sports best known (and perhaps only) vegan, Mac Danzig.

In the opening bout of the evening, up-and-coming welterweight Anthony Rumble Johnson used his significant height and reach advantage to dispatch tough Luigi Fioravanti. After the fight he was very critical of himself in his postfight interview calling his performance sloppy.

The live crowd in Tampa gave a very poor account of themselves, at times booing fighters mercilessly for no apparent reason whatsoever. This was in addition to the usual booing when the fight goes to the ground typical of uneducated MMA fans--they often turned on fighters midbout for no discernible reason. Their behavior reached a nadir in Cain Velasquez's post fight interview, where he was booed mercilessly despite an impressive victory and informing Joe Rogan that he was about to become a father for the first time. It was somewhat surprising, since the Tampa/St. Pete area is home to a flourishing MMA scene.

Joe Vs. The Volcano Is An Under Rated Film

Tom Hanks always showed promise, even back when he was in the short lived sitcom, Bosom Buddies. He was able to spin off of that success to become one of the most sought after actors in Hollywood. Many critics will be quick to point out: His acting chops may not be on par with DeNiro or Hoffman, but what he lacks in method, he more than makes up for with sheer charisma and likability. It's this likability that led him to a blossoming comedy career with Big and Turner and Hooch, and it's a key ingredient to what makes Joe Vs the Volcano one of the best movies to download.

So what makes this one so special? Well for starters, while Big and Turner and Hooch both did an excellent job showcasing Hanks' abilities as a comic actor, Joe Vs. The Volcano is a little more demanding of the actor. Here, he's asked not simply to provide a few funny moments, but to be cast in the shoes of the everyman. At the beginning of the movie, Joe is seen in a situation most of us will find familiar: selling his life away for "three hundred dollars a week".

We start off in a dismal state of affairs, with Joe experiencing an existential crisis, having no idea why he was put on earth. This is driven home by the excellent production design of Beetlejuice's set designer Bo Welch. The factory where Joe works, sitting in the middle of a vast expanse of muddy terrain, is simply disgusting and soul crushing.

Joe, a serious hypochondriac, takes a trip to the doctor's office where he learns that he has a "Brain Cloud". A fatal condition. From here he meets the industrialist played by Lloyd Bridges, who offers him a chance to live like a king for several months, in exchange for his suicide by jumping into a volcano.

The industrialist, played wonderfully in his one scene by Lloyd Bridges, will finance Joe's trip and all the luxuries he can indulge in if he'll go to the Waponi Woo and jump into a volcano. The industrialist uses this island for mining, but the people of the island are fearful of the volcano and believe that it needs a human sacrifice every hundred years lest it blow up and kill them all. The chief, finding nobody among his own cowardly people to do the deed, needs Joe to do it.

Joe is made to fully appreciate what a gift life is. By accepting his death, by having nothing to lose, Joe is able to do anything he wants in life, including jumping into a volcano. This is where the movie's philosophy lies, this is the meaning of life: Enjoy it for what it is. Don't worry about the afterlife, don't worry about mortality or bills or rent, don't let the troubles of the world get you down, just appreciate every moment for what it is.

This feeling, this almost boring, understated wisdom also drives the look and feel of the movie. If you haven't seen this movie, you've never seen a movie that looks like this. It seems to take place in some kind of second cousin fantasy reflection of our own world.

SPOILER! The original ending of the film had the industrialist and the doctor getting what they deserve for pulling one over on Joe. It's probably better that they went with another take, because while those two characters do serve as the villains, in a sense, they also serve as Joe's saviors, giving him his life back.

1977 Triple Crown Winner Seattle Slew

Seattle Slew--the last living Triple Crown winner--died on May 7, 2002 at the age of 28. As one of only 11 Triple Crown winners in history, he is by default one of the greatest horses in the history of thoroughbred racing. Of those 11 legendary animals, Seattle Slew was the only one to complete the Triple Crown with an undefeated record, as well as the only one to have been purchased at a public auction. After retiring in'78, Slew became one of the most important and successful stud horses in the history of the sport. He sired 1,066 foals including 102 stakes race winners. Among this impressive group of offspring was the'84 Kentucky Derby winner, Swale. All told, Slew's offspring have won an amazing $76 million dollars at the race track. Slew's stud fee of $300,000 made him a very profitable horse even after his racing career was over. Slew wasn't a particularly attractive horse, but he had the toughness of a championship boxer and the sort of intestinal fortitude and desire that can only be given by The Creator.

The Seattle Slew story began very modestly at a public auction in Lexington, Kentucky. The Keeneland Summer Yearling sale wasn't supposed to be the marketplace of champions, and the idea that this particular horse would ever amount to anything other than a farmhand was downright laughable. He was somewhat clumsy looking due to a front right forefoot splay and had a shuffling gait at trot. Slew wasn't a beautifully majestic creature like his Triple Crown winning predecessor, Secretariat. Slew was borderline ugly. So ungainly a creature was he that he was given the less than inspiring nickname "Baby Huey" by the Keeneland staff. He was purchased by two couples (Karen and Mickey Taylor and Jim and Sally Hill) for $17,500. What wasn't apparent at the yearling sale was the intangibles that make up a championship thoroughbred--poise under pressure, love of competition, toughness, heart and desire. His owners had unwittingly stumbled onto an equine Muhammad Ali, and his competitive fire quickly became apparent to his trainers and jockeys. His first race came at Belmont Park in'76, and he entered--and won--three races as a two year old giving a glimpse as to what like ahead.

Slew became the Kentucky Derby favorite by winning his three prep races as a three year old, including prestigious Wood Memorial. In the Derby, Slew got off to a terrible start as he stumbled from the gate much like War Emblem did in the 2002 Belmont. Unlike 2002's Triple Crown contender, however, Slew was able to recover from that miscue and basically force his way through a pack of other horses to position himself at the front of the field at the quarter mile pole. Slew would win the Derby by a length and 3 quarters. He took another tough victory at the Preakness before clinching the Triple Crown with a 4 length victory in the Belmont Stakes.

Slew continued to campaign as a four year old, but in the days before the Breeder's Cup there weren't many opportunities for an older horse. He retired to stud in'78, where he sired champions such as the aforementioned Swale and'92 Belmont Champ AP Indy. Slew stood at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Kentucky from'85 until early 2002 when he was moved to Hill 'n' Dale Farm in Lexington, KY following a spinal operation.

In some ways, Slew had much in common with the heavyweight championship reign of Larry Holmes. He came so quickly on the heels of such incredible excellence--Slew was forever in the shadow of'73 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, Holmes on the heels of Muhammad Ali--that he never gained the appreciation he deserved during his prime. In hindsight, however, it has finally been noted what an exceptional horse he really was. Jockey Angel Cordero, who rode Slew during the twilight of his career noted "If I had a chance to take any horse in the world, if someone said your life is depending on riding one horse to win, I would take (Slew). I rode 44,000 horses, but he was special, he was different. He was muscled, like a wrestler. He ran different than any other horse. It was like he came from another planet."

Following his death in 2002, Slew was laid to rest at Hill 'n' Dale Farm in Kentucky under a statue memorializing his legacy.

Though his scoring records have been obliterated by Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, former Boston Bruins/New York Rangers center Phil Esposito is still regarded by hockey cognoscenti as one of the greatest offensive players in the history of the game. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, as is his brother Tony Esposito who was a standout goaltender for the Chicago Blackhawks.

A native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Esposito was signed by the Chicago Blackhawks as a teenager. After some time in junior hockey, he was called up to the NHL in'64 quickly earning a spot on the teams top line between Bobby Hull and Marcel Dionne. In'67, Esposito was traded to the Boston Bruins along with Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield.

It wasnt long before Esposito started to destroy long standing NHL records. In'69, he became the first NHL player to top the 100 point mark (combined goals and assists) for the season"he obliterated the record with 126 points, which would be the first of six times that hed top the century mark. He topped 100 points in five straight seasons between'71 and'75, missing a sixth straight season by a single point with 99 in'70. Bruins fans were fond of displaying car bumper stickers that read Jesus Saves; Esposito scores on the rebound.

In the'70-71 season, Esposito smashed the NHL record for most goals in a season with 76. That record stood for over a decade until Wayne Gretzky scored 79 for the Edmonton Oilers in'81-82. Gretzky also broke Espositos single season points record of 154. Even now, only four other players including Gretzky have scored more than 150 points in a season and only five others have scored more than 76 goals in a season. Perhaps the most amazing element of Espositos game was the frequency with which he put the puck on net"Espo had 550 shots on goal in'70-71. No one has since come close"in fact, just last Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals became the first player to come within 100 shots of Espositos mark.

In'75, Esposito was traded to the New York Rangers where his experience, intelligence for the game and nose for the puck made him a valuable component of the Broadway Blueshirts offense and he was named team captain. Until the very end of his career, he remained a dangerous scoring threat that all opposing teams were forced to reckon with.

After his retirement in'75, moved into the executive suite. He served as the GM of the Rangers before helping secure an expansion team for Tampa, Florida in'92. Esposito served as the President and GM of the Tampa Bay Lightning until'98.

Boise State Stomps Bowling Green

Bowling Green played Boise State tough on their home field this weekend--at least for one quarter. Things looked good for the host Falcons at the end of the first quarter, as they'd held the #6 ranked Broncos scoreless and were right in the thick of things in a scoreless game. It was all downhill from that point for Bowling Green, as Boise State exploded for 29 unanswered second quarter points. The Broncos would eventually win 49-14.

The Broncos easily covered as -16 road favorites. The 63 combined points went OVER the posted total of 51. Boise State needed four plays or less on their first six scoring drives, and amassed a season high 529 yards of total offense. Their defense also forced the Falcons into three costly turnovers. By halftime, the game was essentially over.

Boise State coach Chris Petersen had insisted on more quick strike scoring drives in the week before the Bowling Green game. They most definitely delivered, and the coach commented to their performance after the contest:

"On offense, that's always the name of the game. It makes it a lot easier when you don't have those 15- and 17-play drives."

Broncos quarterback Kellen Moore threw 17 completions in 21 pass attempts for a total of 247 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. After the game, Moore indicated that his team wasnt resting on their impressive season to date performance:

"There's a lot of football to go and a lot of things to work on.

Coach Petersen concurred with his quarterbacks comment:

"These guys are a fairly mature bunch and if not, we have a staff of mature coaches to keep them focused.

Bowling Green head coach Dave Clawson sounded somewhat in awe of the Broncos 'quick strike' offense:

"That's what they do. When they have 500 yards of offense, it will always be 10 to 12 plays where half their offense came from."

The Broncos, who are enjoying their highest regular season ranking in school history, looked sharp all around on offense despite the absence of second leading rusher DJ Harper. Harper is likely out for the year after a knee injury.

Bowling Green will take a step down in class of opposition next weekend as they host the Ohio Bobcats. Theyll play on the road the next two weeks, traveling to Kent State and Ball State. Boise will return home for a game against FCS opponent UC Davis next Saturday. Theyll play on the road at Tulsa the following weekend, before enjoying a bye week.

One of the more popular events to take place at the Manchester Evening News Arena is wrestling from the WWE. Wrestling is a big business in the USA, and at least once a year the Superstars from the WWE travel to Manchester to perform for the UK crowd in either their Raw or SmackDown! events. Fans can see their idols, such as Triple H and John Cena, up close and personal without having to travel to the United States.

Another US favourite to take place at the MEN is Monster Truck racing. This larger than life sports event sees some of the legendary US monster trucks, such as 'Bigfoot' and 'Gravedigger', crushing a collection of cars live in the arena. Few venues are even large enough to accommodate such an event in the UK, and the Manchester Evening News Arena is one of them.

Other sports events often held at the MEN include boxing, where Manchester favourite Ricky Hatton has often fought for world titles.

Of course it's not just sports travel events that makes the MEN Arena such a popular destination. The venue is also used for many concerts, ranging from pop music acts such as the X-Factor tour, to rock acts such as Nickelback.

The Dead Or Alive Trilogy Is Definitely Worth Viewing

You might not have heard of these movies. If you're thinking about the ones based on the Xbox and Playstation games, we're not talking about those, but rather the trilogy of bizarre action flicks by Japanese crazy-man director Takashi Miike. This trilogy of movie downloads offers just what you're looking for if you've gotten tired of the same old same old from American action flicks and you're ready for something a little different, and a little strange.

The first in the series, Dead or Alive, was focused on the idea of simply teaming up the cult legends Sho Aikawa and Riki Takeuchi, sort of the Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino of the cult Japanese film scene. So think of it like Japan's answer to Heat. Interestingly, the movie was meant to solve one of the main problems with that movie: The ending was kind of an anti-climax.

We won't spoil the ending of Dead or Alive, but let's just say that it's certainly not an anti-climax. The entire movie is a thrill ride, starting with a rock video style montage that gets you into the movie's world fast, and culminating in an ending that you will not believe.

The second in the trilogy offers a different sort of approach with the same crazy style. This one recasts the two leads as two new characters. Where the first had the two as rival cop and gangster, this one has them as a pair of hitmen who grew up together and who donate all of their money to fighting diseases in developing countries.

Interestingly, while the movie is very positive in its outlook and portrays its heroes in a positive light, the reality of violence is not simply glossed over. The first is a wild action movie, the second is a little more honest about the weight of violence on a person's heart.

The third film, Dead or Alive Final, goes in the science fiction direction, more specifically, cyberpunk, with replicants and evil dystopian governments. While it might not be the most exciting of the trilogy, it's worth seeing so you can check out how it ties the whole thing together in such a strange way.

If you like the Dead or Alive trilogy, you should also check out Deadly Outlaw Rekka, which feels like the fourth film in the series in spirit. It has the same sense of over the top craziness and stars Riki Takeuchi in the lead role.

The first movie's trailer proudly declares that Miike is the dog with rabies of the Japanese film world, and it's true, it's not just a clever tagline for the trailer. The guy makes something like five or six movies a year, and has made about one hundred since his debut some years ago. He is one of the most prolific directors out there, and while the quality varies, if only one in ten is any good, he's already one of the greats.
