Is Learning Self Defence Technique Really Important?

By Mukhzani Mustaffa

Why should you learn self defence? It's easier to just buy a pepper spray, stun gun or even a gun. Well, it's totally true. Having any kind of weapon for self defence is a lot easier. If someone tries to rob you, just take out you pepper spray and spray at his face. He'll fall down on his knees and start crying like a baby.

Let me give you a scenario. For example, you just took out your money from the bank. While walking back to your car. Suddenly someone stopped you and tries to rob you. But your pepper spray is all the way in your bag. By the time you try to reach for it, the robber snatch your bag and ran away with all your hard earn money. It might be worse, you got into a struggle with your attacker and he manages to get your pepper spray instead. Now you are in an even worse situation.

Someone might say, just forget about your money because it's not worth it. Okay, let me give you another example. What if you are going to use that money to pay for your son's medical bill that is gravely sick with a critical disease. You sure you just want to hand over your money?

What if you have just finished your night shift and on the way back home, you got jumped by your attacker. The attacker is not just interested in your money, but intends to rape you too. You are being bullied and the person bullying you gets carried away and starts punching you in the face. Of course you want to dodge his punches and pushes him away.

I bet in those situations, you hope that you know some sort of self defence techniques. Your self defence tools are only useful if you had it with you all the time and easily reachable. But the truth is, it can be easily misplaced. Worst case scenario, your attacker might overpower you and use your tools against you.

But most of us never bother to learn self defence technique because we think it is too complicated and takes a lot of time. It's true but only if you want to some sort of muay thai (Thailand's martial art) champion or something. You do not need to spend a lot of time because your goal is not to get in a prolong fight.

The truth is you just need to spend 10-15 minutes per day 2-3 times per week to build up your confidence and reflex. Or better yet, spend 40 minutes once or twice per week and combine it with your weekly cardio exercises. You get to keep in shape and learn self defence at the same time.

However, as long as you can defend yourself or your loved ones it really doesn't matter how you do it. If you really don't see yourself spending some time learning self defence technique, just get yourself any self defence product but make sure you always bring it with you. You can learn self defence technique and have self defence tools too. Pick which one is most comfortable for you.
