A Look At The Best Obstacle Course Races

By Lana Bray

Obstacle races possess unique quirks and personalities just like humans, in a way that makes people either love or hate them. Hence, anyone who wants to be a participant must choose one that suits their temperament as well as fitness goals. A contestant gets from the races what they put into them. A person may want to participate just for fun or to test themselves to find out what they are made of. Either way, there are several of the best obstacle course races to choose from.

The Civilian Military Combination race incorporates its military legacy much better than other races. It draws armed forces members together with civilians who want to find out if they got what it takes to participate in a military oriented competition. Prior to starting the barrier course, participants must successfully go through a pit. This is a challenge whereby competitors are judged according to the amount of reps they can perform in four lifting events being timed.

Columbia muddy run and ride series is a race where each contestant must have a partner. Contestants trade off running a 5 kilometer obstacle course and riding on a mountain bike. Each couple must cross the finish line as a team, but not before wading through a mud pit that is 50 feet long.

Obstacles are designed in manner that will make them fun, not intimidating. All in all, if a contestant is intimidated by a particular barrier, all they have to do is simply avoid it as they will not be penalized. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes since the event is family-friendly.

Goruck is more of a challenge than a race, as the organizers tell would-be participants. Participation is in groups of 30 people each, whereby they are expected to visit a number of cities spread across the country. They should wear weighted rucksacks, with a drill sergeant supervising them to see that they take part in particular mental and physical feats. Physical stamina may be needed in this race, but its main aim is to show participants the importance of teamwork in accomplishing their goals.

Rugged maniac is a race that has managed to balance between a dead serious competition and some fun. A varied terrain and several well constructed barriers contribute to the entire quality of the race. Participants can expect an excellent mixture of just for laughs and serious competitors going through the course. Almost half of the competitors are female, proving that it the most gender balanced race.

Another notable obstacle race is referred to as Run For Lives, involving a course of 5 kilometers. Contestants are supposed to avoid zombies who lurk near barriers, trying to take away their three flags. To get a medal by avoiding being considered a zombie, a participant must cross the finishing line holding at least one flag. The courses and obstacles situated at each race location are closely watched by event organizers. A participant may skip a barrier, but this will result in them not getting a prize as they will be considered a zombie.

The Spartan Beast is one of the best obstacle course races but definitely for serious competitors only. It is a grueling course of more than 10 kilometers where only about 60% of the starters actually finish.
