Things To Do In Thermopolis Near Wind River WY

By Leslie Ball

It may sound like a fictitious town in a superhero comic book, but Thermopolis is a real place. Located near Wind River WY, it has two nicknames, Thermop and T-Town. Thermopolis is derived from the Greek words for Hot City, because it is situated near a hot springs, as the name Hot Springs County would imply. The nearby state park encompasses the largest hot spring on the planet, complete with nearly a dozen mineral pools. The public have access to the springs for free, thanks to a treaty signed with the local Indian tribes.

This tiny hamlet in the middle of cowboy country is distinct for having the only specimen outside Europe of the fossil, Archeoptryx. Because it has characteristics of both dinosaurs and birds, scientists consider it to be a transitional life form between the reptilian and avian classes. This is massively significant in terms of the mechanisms of evolution.

Because Archopteryx possessed feathered wings and had the stature of a raven, scientists have determined that it could fly. It dwelt 150 Ma (150 million years ago) and had more structural features in common with dinosaurs than it did with birds.

There are two highways into Thermopolis: Highway 120, which connects Wyoming to the Montana state line at Highway 72, and Highway 789, which connects Montana with Colorado, the state immediately south of Wyoming. Hot Springs County has only one school district, which runs an elementary school, a high school and a middle school. The local hospital can provide the full spectrum of medical care services and has a fully-equipped, up-to-date 25-bed ICU.

At 5.85 people per square mile, Wyoming has the lowest population density of any state in the United States of America. Its motto is Equal Rights, and it goes by the nicknames, the Equality State, the Cowboy State, and Big Wyoming. Border states include Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, Idaho, and Montana. Cheyenne is the state capital.

Cities within 159 miles of Thermopolis include Jackson, Casper, and Green River. Jackson, the county seat of Teton and a four-hour drive form Thermopolis, is located within the Jackson Hole Valley. The town itself is often erroneously referred to as Jackson Hole. Jackson was immortalized in the country and western song sung by Johnny and June Carter. Jackson Hole is a popular spot for skiing.

Casper, Wyoming, also known as Oil City, was named by Forbes Magazine as the most family-friendly small town in the west and ranked it 8th in the country overall. The seat of Natrona County, Casper has earned itself the reputation as a oil boomtown and as a cowboy town.

The capital of the southwestern county, Sweetwater, is Green River. Green River has a low population density of 911 residents per square mile. Among the notable residents from Green River are Tom Schalow, scheduled to be the first man to place his feet on Mars; Helen Moody, an Olympic silver and gold medal-winner; and Curt Gowdy, television sports broadcaster.
