By Tanisha Berg

A water plug is a protective measure device and source of water that is supplied in urban and suburban areas to help put fires off. It is usually connected to taps to bring water from the main source. A hose pipe and a valve are attached to the plug to enable powerfully pump water that is used for extinguishing flames. You can find variety of plugs but the choice depends on the preference. One can learn more by enrolling in fire hydrant training courses.

The size of the hose, pump and the location of the plug determines the pressure of water. Users use pumps to enable increase water pressure and split water into multiple streams that is used in different points. One should be careful when connecting and disconnecting water plug because it can damage hose pipes and valuable equipment.

Charged hose line in this plug makes it heavy and high. Water pressure on the other hand makes charged hose line stiff and make it unable to take tight turns once pumped. The pressure from the plug can adequately position the hose if it is unobstructed. Water hose can be connected using threads and rubber to ensure no leakage as this can result to distortion of pipes.

The device has valves that are designed to allow it either work full-on or full-off. The valves do not allow water throttling. The valves are specifically made for full operation not partial operation. Water spilling on the ground near the plug can result to scouring if the valves are partially opened. A hose should be attached to a plug before opening main valve especially if it is connected to a truck or when having gate valve.

When putting off fires, one must gown properly. This includes wearing of protective clothes. Some of the protective gears that you must wear are gloves and a head gear. These are mainly to ensure safety of those putting off the flames. In case there is high pressure, the bystanders might stand a chance of getting injured. The law is against the parking of vehicles close to the operation area.

Yellow or red paints are used on the curbs to indicate regions that one should not park the car. Plugs need to be positioned in visible and accessible places in cases of emergency.in America; the recommended distance is 3 to 5 meters usually indicated using yellow ribbons. This creates an alarm to passersby that something is in flames.

The water plug should be opened for checkup regularly in order to maintain its efficiency. There are special tools that are used for repairing and maintenance of a plug. A wrench with a pentagon-shaped socket is the most largely used tool globally. There is loss of resources because of vandalism caused by wastage of water at the main source.

Street sweepers and tank trucks use water plug for filling their tanks that are used for performing municipal services. Sewerage is also flushed out by sewer trucks that get water from the municipal water plugs. They are also important gadgets that give signal in case of water leakage.
