By Mike Shark

Before you can go on reading horse racing tips, it is best that you understand the terms and jargons used on them. Here are some of the basic terms used on Australian horse racing tips. The most common of all terms are the win and the place. The win basically means that the horse you bet on won the first place. Another term for win only bets is straight out bets.

A place means the horse is a first, second or a third runner up. A place only bet is when you bet on a horse to get the first, second or third place only. However, not all placers will win the bet. The number of runners will determine who gets paid. If there are eight runners of more, than those who bet for the first, second and third place can collect. If there are five to seven runners, then only the first and the second will be paid. If the number of runners is less than five, then only the first runner can collect.

There is a minimum weight that is set for qualifying horses. A flying race is an open sprint race. This means that there are no restrictions, however horses must finish a track that is 1200 meters or shorter. A flying welter is a sprint race that is restricted to a certain weight. An invitation race is a special race where only invited horses are allowed to join. Lastly there is the condition race and the open race. A conditions race is that is restricted to certain conditions. These conditions may be color, gender, age, number of wins and even the price money. On the other hand, an open race is a type of race that has no conditions or restrictions. It is open to all types of horses.

Horse racing tips may only apply to a certain kind of race. In order to help us understand more about horse racing, it is best to learn that there are different race types. When a horse races on a track without hurdles or any planned obstacles, we call that a flat race. On the other hand, race types with planned obstacles are called hurdle race. The maximum height for a hurdle is one meter. The months from March to August makes the Australian jumps season. Maiden Races are a race that is exclusively for horses who haven't won races yet.

Winning a specific race type does not make the horse non-maiden on another. This means that if the horse won on a flat race, it is still eligible for a maiden race for hurdles. Aside from the hurdles there is another race type that involves jumping. It is called the steeplechase race. In steeplechase races the obstacles are higher and have a more solid composition. Unlike the hurdles where the obstacles have a maximum of one meter, the maximum height of obstacles in a steeplechase race is 1.15 meters. The obstacles can be in a form of a brick wall or a hedge. Also obstacles can also be in the form of ditches. Class races are races for a specific class or horse only. In Australia, horses are classified from class one to six depending on the number of races they already won.
