School Adventure Trips Can Be Fun And Educational

By Brenda Carrens

For the most part, children do enjoy learning. However, it is common for students to feel restless being in the classroom every day. To keep things interesting, teachers could try taking their students on a few school adventure trips.

Going on an outdoor adventure can be a great break from the classroom for students of any age. Children are much more likely to be excited about learning when they are able to see and touch things in person. To see just how much the children have learned from a recent lesson, teachers could take them on an outing related to the subject.

A variety of subjects could benefit from this reinforcement. Science, Social Studies and Art teachers could all plan outings that would enforce what they've been teaching in the classroom. Any skepticism about how much a student learns on a school trip could be quickly alleviated just by asking a few students about their experiences. It's surprising how much they learn and retain.

Science is a great topic to study on an outdoor trip. A teacher could take students on an outing to a nearby stream or pond after completing a segment on biology. This would give the students a firsthand glimpse at what types of organisms can be found nearby.

An outdoor trip could be perfect for a Social Studies class as well. Attending a reenactment of a battle performed by a historical society or local park would be very beneficial. Students are much more likely to remember what they saw in person compared to what they've read in a text book.

An outdoor trip would even be beneficial for teaching an Art class. By picking up small sticks and leaves, younger children could make an interesting collage. For older students that may be learning about architecture, a trip to the city would be a great way reinforce what they're learning.

There's really no limit to what is possible. The experience of going on a few school adventure trips can be fun and educational for all students. It is also quite rewarding for teachers as they'll see firsthand how much their students have learned.
