An Introduction To The Martial Arts Teachers Association

By Paulette Hart

There are numerous benefits to being part of a martial arts class, whether it is kickboxing, karate or any of the other wide range of styles available. They help to encourage self discipline and develop self confidence. However some people may feel that classes are often more geared towards younger people rather than adults. These are the kinds of people that would benefit from a class based on methods taught by the Martial Arts Teachers Association.

One of the reasons that the MATA class was created was due to a drop in adult class attendance. There is the perception that the way classes such as karate and kickboxing classes are taught is too fixed on learning moves in a way that is better suited to children than adults. This can inevitably lead to frustration and with older members often dropping out.

There is also the issue that some people feel that these methods are not necessarily applicable in real life situations. The moves can at times feel complicated and may not be easy to remember in the kind of high pressure situation where they are likely to be needed. Therefore the MATA style of class looks at ways for people to use techniques that are easy to remember and can be quickly used in dangerous situations.

Each MATA class covers three basic modules. The first is kickboxing. This is mainly about basic moves without contact. The second module covers the strikes and blows associated with styles such as karate and kung fu. Like the first module this is non contact. The final module looks at weapons training and ground defence techniques.

It needs to be emphasized that MATA classes are not meant to be replacements for traditional classes, merely offering an alternative for people that want them. You can still possible to offer traditional techniques alongside the MATA program. Whether you want to or not depends on your preference as an instructor.

It should be emphasized that MATA classes are not intended to replace traditional teaching, merely to offer an alternative. People studying these classes can also learn traditional techniques and training methods alongside it should they wish. You can find out more about the Martial Arts Teachers Association online to see if their methods are suitable for you.
