A Look Into Swallowing Disorders

By Beryl Dalton

To many doctors, this is more than a symptom but a condition in its own right. Dysphagia as medically known, this is condition occurs when an individual faces difficulties in swallowing of food. Sufferers of this disorder sometimes do not even know. This is because of its painless nature unlike the odynophagia and globus that denote a lump formed in the throat. Swallowing disorders has therefore been a condition disturbing many.

In the study of swallowing, there are a number of algorithmic processes that ought to be followed to ensure this process goes on well. The first process is the food preparation process. This occurs in a persons mouth. Food after being put in your mouth, food is chewed to make it easier for swallowing. Then secondly, the tongue rolls to push the food down the throat to begin the consumption. These two processes are voluntary and human beings can alter the nature of them.

The third process is the pharyngeal stage. This stage occurs right in pharynx. It is the body part which is in between the throat and the esophagus preventing food from going into the trachea. The last stage is the esophageal stage. This is the stage where food passes the esophagus and goes right into the stomach. The first two stages can be controlled voluntarily. However the last two stages are incontrollable and involve a lot of body reflex. Failure in this causes this condition.

The way you could know whether you have this condition or note is important. There are a number of symptoms one can judge from. The known ones are a change in voice, drooling, and feeling of a lump in the throat, weight loss and malnutrition. It also could include coughs. This is as a result of food not passing the esophagus to the stomach.

If food passes to the wind pipe, then that is a recipe for disaster. This can cause aspiration pneumonia. This is dangerous as it can escalate to worsened medical cases. If food goes in wind pipe, normal people ought to cough, however, these do not. This is why patients have a wet voice whenever they speak during or after eating.

There are a number of causes of swallowing discomforts. They include the Zenker diverticulum, Esophagial diverticula, webs and rings in esophagus, esophageal cancer, esophageal atresia, achalasia, dyspaghia lusoria and gastro esophageal reflux. In many cases, the dysphagia causes the narrowing of the lumen. This inhibits passage and in later cases even water.

Doctors use a wide range of technology based procedures to analyze and note the problem. Esophagoscopy and the laryngoscopy are some of the equipment used to get the direct views. A CT scan can be used however it cannot lead to the doctors noting the cause of the swallowing disorder. This problem is common in elderly, those who have had strokes before and the sufferers of acute chronic disorders.

This condition is relative to the elderly. There are a number of remedies to employ. A diet change is one. Taking in of ingestible of small portion is wise. Then, a therapy on how to chew and swallow exercises too can go a long way.
