First Aid Supplies Everyone Should Buy

By Eric Holm

Many people make the mistake of failing to prepare for an emergency situation. Assembling the proper first aid supplies well in advance of a disaster can make all the difference between life and death. Accidents can happen anywhere and at any time of the day or night. Everyone should invest the time and effort into assembling some basic items and storing them in a central location.

Acquiring a first aid kit with a few extra supplies does not cost a fortune. You can easily spend a minimal amount of money in buying something which is highly necessary to evade any minor or major casualty in your life. Although no first aid kit can have supplies to handle all major medical troubles that occurs suddenly; a properly accumulated first aid kit can handle all emergency situations, or enable the victim to survive till expert medicare arrives.

Before shopping for supplies, prepare a first aid check list. Some injuries will require specific items for treatment. A kit prepared for a motor vehicle may contain certain items that are not needed for a kit stored at home. Each kit should be filled with a variety of items that will be useful regardless of the specific nature of the emergency. Consumers may choose to assemble kits from scratch or buy a prepackaged kit that contains everything on their list.

Items in a first aid kit should always include an assortment of bandages, scissors, sterile pads, tweezers, disinfectant and surgical tape. A bottle of aspirin for pain relief should also be added. Check the date on any medications or ointments and toss anything that is expired. This is something that will have to be done periodically to ensure the kit is ready at all times. Insect repellent should also be on the first aid list. This will keep the pests away. Sunscreen with a minimum SPF factor of 30 should be used for protection from the sun. The kit should also contain hand sanitizer, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, a CPR mouth guard and a basic suture kit. A small kit with these basic items will be adequate for treating most minor injuries. Small cuts and abrasions will need to be cleaned and covered with a bandage. Some kits are much more sophisticated and will contain equipment that is useful for more serious types of trauma. A defibrillator machine is useful if someone is suffering a heart attack. These machines can be life saving if an accident occurs in some remote location. With professional help so far away, a defibrillator can mean the difference between life and death when used promptly. Smelling salts are used to revive someone who has lost consciousness. A thermometer, cold packs, burn ointment and eye wash solution are some additional items that should be packed in a disaster kit.

Although it is difficult to cover up the damage that comes after a disaster a well stocked medical kit with good emergency supplies can successfully prevent a situation becoming worse. So take some time from your busy schedule and assemble your first aid kit and first aid supplies as nothing costs more than the loss of life.
