Enjoy The Wind River WY

By Marci Glover

Wilderness vacations are becoming increasingly popular these days. Visitors are looking for something different, a place where they can experience true solitude. The state of Wyoming has some of the most spectacular scenery of anywhere in the nation. There are literally hundreds of square miles of pristine mountains, rivers and alpine meadows.

The state is well placed for visitors from all over the country. Interstate 80 provides excellent access from both east and west. Many people also choose to fly into one of the regional airports and rent a car. Others drive there motor homes in so that they can spend weeks just enjoying the peace and quiet of Wind River WY. The huge area is well known for its outdoor sports opportunities and back country hiking.

The entire area is an outdoor enthusiasts paradise. There are miles of back country trails that are perfect for hiking. Those who like to really get off the beaten path will be in their element. However, there are some safety factors to keep in mind. Some of the trails are many miles from the nearest town and cell phone reception can be sketchy at best. Only those who really know what they are doing and have all the right equipment should venture out on these trails.

The area is part of the Bridger Wilderness Area. Established in 1964 the area is named for the famous mountain man and explorer Jim Bridger. He was one of the first Europeans to make his way into the wilderness and make contact with the native peoples. His name lives on and is forever linked with a love of the great outdoors.

Today, those who consider themselves serious hikers often make their way to the Wind River area to enjoy some real back country trails. Many are an hour or mores drive from the nearest town. Due to their remote locations these trails are certainly not for beginners. Hikers must be sure to carry all the right gear to protect them from the changeable weather. Even in the height of summer snow showers and thunderstorms are common.

In this remote back country cell phone service tends to be unreliable. For this reason it is vital to have good maps and a compass. One of the best ways to enjoy the area is with an experienced guide. These are people with many years of wilderness training. They are very familiar with the geology and weather patterns. They can really make a huge difference as they bring an extra level of understanding to the trip. Hikes can be one day or up to a week. In these cases all the supplies must be carried in and a base camp set up.

Wild animals are another amazing feature of the Wind River area. Visitors are likely to see both black and grizzly bears, moose, elk and wolves. It is important to know how to behave should an encounter occur.

The local park ranger station is a good place to start any trip. The knowledgeable staff will give advice to visitors to help stay safe and really make the most of their vacation.
