Key West Fishing Charters Provide Great Value

By Jayne Rutledge

If you enjoy leisure and have the ability to help people enjoy themselves, you might consider starting a business in a vacation destination that is centered on tourism. Key West fishing charters are a great way to maximize on this. There are minimal startup costs, compared to other businesses and the satisfaction of being a guide is relatively good. South Florida provides a steady customer base too.

If you are a fan of rod and reel, Key West is probably already high on your list of places to visit. The tarpon are probably the most popular fish to go after as they provide a massive fight and quite a spectacle when they leap out of the water in an effort to rid themselves of your tackle. There are few places where they live so abundantly.

There are other sport fish to chase down as well. Grouper make a tasty target and are valued for their delicious meat. Depending on which fish you choose to go after, you should try to find the charter service that is most able to help you succeed. Local knowledge about sweet spots and local areas will put you on the fish in no time.

The startup process for an operation like this is reasonably simple. The most difficult part of it is getting your captain's license. A commercial captain's license comes in several different grades but the easiest is what is known as a "six-pack" license. This license allows you to take 6 paying customers on the boat. For most captains, this is all that is necessary.

Once a commercial license is obtained, a boat should be the next order of business. Key West provides countless opportunities for new and used watercraft but not all of them are ideal for fishing. Ideally you want something that provides comfortable seating and accommodations for all of your passengers so you don't want anything that is too small.

Buying a boat that is too large can be just as bad for you though. Larger vessels consume more fuel and need more water to stay afloat. More fuel means more overhead and as fuel is one of the most expensive things to consider, a large boat will be very expensive. Considering how much water they draft is important because if you can't get to the fish, you can't provide your customers with the chance to catch them.

Key West provides a steady stream of customers too. There are thousands of people arriving and leaving every day. Tourism is a transient industry and some seasons are better than others but there is a steady stream of people in south Florida the whole year round. Taking advantage of this is a smart way to turn a dollar.

Planning your next vacation doesn't have to involve international travel if you're looking for a tropical get away. Key West fishing charters can provide your favorite sport fisherman with the adventure of a lifetime and the island itself provides countless different opportunities for entertainment and culture. The biggest problem with Key West is that when you visit, you don't want to leave.
