Information On Fly Fishing Key West

By Jayne Rutledge

Fly fishing refers to an angling technique in which there is use of artificial flies to catch fish. Casting of the fly is done using a fly rod, reel and a specialized line that is weighted. Fly fishermen make use of flies that are handheld and look like natural invertebrates or other sources of food to provoke fish to strike. When considering fly fishing Key West residents have a number of tips that are useful.

Choosing the flies will be an important exercise. The factors that govern the choice of flies are size, shape, color and action of flies respectively. When fishing is to be done in salty water however, action is the most important factor to consider. The construction of flies is done such that they can float, be sunken partially or sink. Fish usually expect their food sources to be in certain water columns. This should be known by fishermen for success.

When making a choice of the colors, periodic color patterns need to be considered. Flies used during early spring, late fall and winter are usually darker so that they match the color of the environment. Flies that are lighter appear when the weather is warmer. The choice of the right flies is a crucial factor that fishermen should get right.

Fishing flies are either impressionistic or at times exact imitations. The level to which they are effective will be dependent on the selective level of the fish due to availability of food, fishing pressure and also conditions of the weather. Fish should be approached from outside their visibility cone. It should be remembered that submerged fish can see people from further away than fish that are closer to the surface because of light being refracted by the surface of water.

Because of the sensitivity of fish to sounds and vibrations, fishermen should approach slowly. Watching the behavior of fish before casting is very important. The timing of its rises needs to be observed so that the right flies are put on the water, and so that they arrive when the fish begins to look upward. In water that is salty, learning the speed at which target fish take flies will be instrumental to success.

When casting is done to fish that are rising, the rise rings should not be targeted. The fly ought to be put at least 3 or 4 feet in front where the fish was seen to rise last. If need be, one should allow for time to throw an upstream mend into the line. Difficult currents which create drag fast would require one to throw close to fish so that they see the fly before they start to appear unnatural.

Effective nymphing will require two aspects; drag free drifts and staying in touch with flies. More often than not, the best way to achieve this is to extend the rod and keep as much of the line as possible out of the current. The other option is to high-stick with only the leader touching the water.

In considering the method fly fishing Key West residents have several useful tips. It will however take some time before one gains the required experience. It is among the cheap methods used to fish.
