Custom Knives And Other Items Make The Best 48 Hour Emergency Kits

By Harriett Crosby

A basic 48 hour emergency kit is something every family should have. They should contain items like food to eat, water to drink and custom knives for protection and cloths. Emergencies happen all the time. It could be something as common as the power going out for a few days because of a tornado or having to deal with the aftermath of a hurricane.

These kits are generally a collection of items people could need to survive during an unplanned emergency. It is often best to have all these things put together so they are easily reached within a moments notice. If you end up leaving it is not likely you will have extra time to start searching through your items to pick or choose what it is you will need for the following few days or have an opportunity to get them in local stores.

To survive on your own you will need three basic things; food, water and a limited amount of miscellaneous supplies. You should plan for these supplies to last you and your family for at least 48 hours or 2 days. Often there are local, state, and federal government agencies around to help people but they may not get to everyone immediately. They may reach you in just a few hours or in several days.

It is also important that you plan your kit without having common conveniences. Often the basic services people take for granite like electricity, gas, phone, water and sewage treatment may not be working. They could be off for several days so your kit should reflect this possibility.

Each kit needs at least a gallon of clean water. It is often best to break this into smaller 12 to 18 ounce bottles. They should have a workable filter with some iodine tablets also in case your water supply becomes low and your water must be filtered or treated.

Planning the food can be a little harder. Typically granola or oatmeal bars make good high calorie foods. Mixed nuts and fresh honey are items that seldom spoil when stored for long times. Canned tuna or chicken is nice for making quick impromptu meals. Oats, dried beans and jerky are nice for filling out meals. A bag of hard candies, tootsie rolls and pops and gum is good for making snacks.

Some miscellaneous items you should also pack are a flashlight and extra batteries. A radio with a hand crank. Matches, a lighter and some candles for just in case moments. You should also pack toiletry and showering items along with a good first aid pack. Some final items to add are eating utensils, a pocket knife, duct tape and a can opener.

If you have the room some extra items you can add to your two day hour kit are a waterproof jacket, change of clothing and your favored custom knives. You might bring some can goods like meals and soups but try getting the condensed cans. Remember these kits need to be portable and easily accessible. Try to check through them at least every 6 months or so to keep them up to date so they can go at a moments notice.
