Wear socks with your sneakers. Doing so can damage the foot as the shoe rubs against it directly. This also promotes the growth of foot fungus since the foot is in a shoe getting moist. Wear socks made of cotton to keep feet dry.

Flip-flops are not smart footwear in all situations. They do not support your feet the way they need to and could lead to ankle, foot or toe injuries. So keep flip-flops for limited, recreational use.

Have both of your feet measured if you're unsure of your size. Many people have one foot that is smaller than the other. Try to find shoes that will comfortably fit your larger foot.

Prior to purchasing any shoes, get them both on your feet and walk around. During this walk, ensure the shoe is comfortable and that it doesn't slip and slide as you walk. Experiment with different sizes so you get the proper fit.

Learn what type of arch you have before you buy shoes so you can pick the ones that fit you best. Get the bottom part of your foot wet and step onto a plain piece of paper. The wet parts should let you see what your arch type is. If you can see the entire footprint, your have a flat arch. If only your toes and heel are visible, you have a high arch. This information will help you find a shoe that is the right fit for your foot.

For younger children, purchase shoes that have Velcro. Even if your child has learned how to tie shoes, it still may take you a long time. Buy yourself a shoe that ties and one that doesn't to help you in the morning.
