How To Find Concealed Carry Illinois Classes

By Leanne Goff

In July 2013 IL Public Act 98-63 required anyone wishing to carry a concealed firearm to be licensed. A major aspect of this law is the requirement to take concealed carry Illinois classes. This class covers all aspects of handgun safety and handling and the concealed carry law. Those found carrying without a permit are subject to a Class A Misdemeanor; multiple offenses can result in a Felony.

To qualify for a CCL, the applicant must be 21 or over and have a valid FOID (Firearm Owner Identification Card). Anyone with a criminal record involving physical violence, force, or multiple convictions of driving under the influence are not eligible. Also, anyone with an arrest warrant or conviction pending, an active judgment, or has been in a drug or alcohol treatment program in the past 5 years is not eligible. If you meet these criteria, a 16 hour class by a certified instructor must also be completed.

Only those who are retired or current peace officers are exempt from this law. Retired officers can get approved via the federally run IROCC Program. For more information on exemptions, check online for information from the state. Those from out-of-state wishing to be eligible must check their home state's laws, which must closely match those of IL.

The certification course must total at least 16 hours. The course can be done in shorter increments, or a day-long intensive. Sessions are available that fit just about any schedule, but private instruction is also available if needed. Most schools post their schedules online.

While all concealed carry Illinois classes will follow a similar curriculum, it is important to check out the school's instructors. All will be certified to teach the course, but it is important to find out their background and any specialized experience (law or military, for example). This way you can choose an instructor that fits with your interest and particular needs.

Classroom study is an important aspect of this course. You will be taught the basics of safe gun handling, proper storage of both weapons and ammunition and cleaning and caring for a pistol. An overview of ammunition and accessories is also included. The focus of the class is what constitute lawful concealment. Many schools use "what-if" scenarios to help you clearly understand what is legal and what is not. Most importantly, the laws covering use of force and self defense are covered in depth.

Range time is an important component of the training. Instructors will demonstrate and instruct you on stance, grip and breathing. Pistol handling and control basics are reviewed and students are evaluated and critiqued until proficient. Time handling and firing provides students with confidence that they can carry into the real world.

With over 400,000 applications being projected for Illinois CCLs this year, it is important to get on the list for a course as soon as possible. Wait times for concealed carry Illinois classes are now up to 6 months, with range time wait times sometimes longer. Check online for a list of registered schools in your area and don't delay in signing up.
