The Top 3 Players in Iowa Football History

By Jack Jones

The Iowa Hawkeyes compete in the Big Ten Conference -- which now has 12 teams -- and have been playing college football since 1889. Iowa has claimed one (1) National Title and eleven (11) Conference titles in its football history, and is home to one (1) Heisman Trophy winner. The top three greatest players in Iowa football history are Bob Sanders, Shonn Greene and Nile Kinnick.

No. 3: Bob Sanders, S, (2000 - 2003)

Bob Sanders was a hard-hitting safety in college despite being only 5-foot-8. He could be seen everywhere at once on the field when the Hawkeyes were on defense. In 2001 he was named the MVP of the Iowa defensive unit and also made the All-Big Ten first team. He quickly became a leader of the team when he arrived on campus and became known for his hard-hitting tackles. He was named to the All-Big Ten first team in 2002 and 2003 and in his senior year was captain of the defensive unit. He ended his career at Iowa with 338 tackles, 7 interceptions and 13 forced fumbles.

No. 2: Shonn Greene, RB, (2005 - 2008)

IDespite only playing one full season, Shonn Greene is considered the best running back to ever play at Iowa. Greene set almost every single-season rushing record, won the Doak Walker Award, and was a consensus All-American. Greene rushed for 1,850 yards and 20 touchdowns during the 2008 season. What a lot of people don't remember, is the fact that Greene had to go to a community college just to get his grades up before he could rejoin the team.

No. 1: Nile Kinnick, QB, (1936 - 1939)

Nile Kinnick is the only Heisman Trophy winner in Iowa's football history. He won the Heisman and the Maxwell Award in 1939 and was also a consensus All-American. Nile Kinnick was able to play anywhere on the football field. He played quarterback, running back, defensive back, punter and kicker. The Iowa stadium is named in his honor, as Kinnick Stadium. Kinnick was inducted in the College Hall of Fame in 1951.

Nile Kinnick was always looking to test himself and was many times the bright spot for a disappointing Iowa team. He was determined to make an impact for Iowa and make the Hawkeyes worthy competitors. Nile Kinnick is the greatest football player for Iowa.
