Guide to Wetsuit Care

By Dexter O'Neal

1. HOT WATER WILL DESTROY MY WETSUIT

Hot water and neoprene don't go very well together. In hot water neoprene will lose some of the flexibility so will your wetsuit. So hop out of one's wettie prior to you jump into a hot shower. Also - do not rinse your wetsuit using hot water...

2. SUN IS Awful NEWS FOR MY WETSUIT

Do not leave your wettie under the sun! Sun will be the neoprene's worst enemy. Dry up your wetsuit in the shadow if you can. Ultraviolet rays will result in the neoprene to age much quicker. It's going to get paler, dry and it is going to lose its flexibility. It's not merely Ultraviolet rays. It is black and it is going to get hot that is also not good. What about the time that you are in the water? Your wetsuit is continually cooled by the water plus the sun has only minor effect on the neoprene.

3. HOT TRUNK Will not be A great Place FOR MY WETSUIT

Once more - anything hot is no beneficial for the wetsuit.

4. IRONING MY WETSUIT? You are KIDDING, Right?

What in the world would possess someone to put a hot iron on a rubbery material like neoprene? Do not do it, no matter how wrinkly your wetsuit is :)!

5. How to DRY MY WETSUIT

Dry your wettie inside out. By executing this you can preserve the flexibility of the outer side intact, considering the fact that it will be in total shade and out of harm's way of the UV rays.

6. HOW/WHERE TO Keep MY WETSUIT?

You must store your wetsuit on flat surface or wide coat hanger. Thin coat hanger will stretch out the neoprene on the shoulders, you can see it right away when you leave it hanging for a longer time.

7. WHAT You can DO Today...

Do not wait till tomorrow. Rinse your wettie with cold water and after that dry it. As soon as you can. Do not leave your damp wetsuit to rot inside a bag, box wherever...

8. How to GET SURFWAX OF MY WETSUIT?

I don't think that any chemical that removes surf wax is at the same time extremely favorable to neoprene. So get over it! Even when you scrape it off, it's going to stick back on anyway.

9. CAN I Make use of WASHING POWDER TO CLEAN MY WETSUIT?

No! The chemical substances in ordinary washing powder are too aggressive for the wettie. There are some mild soaps or soaps produced specially for cleaning wetsuits you can make use of. If you don't have them - just use fresh water.

10. WASHING MY WETSUIT In a WASHING MACHINE?

Washing machine means heat, abuse and washing powder: 3 factors that your wetsuit need to avoid. (in the event you set your washing machine to lowest heat possible, no spin cycle, no tumble dry, no washing powder then every once in a while you might wash it in a washing machine).

11. BLEACH?

Omfg. It is possible to only bleach it after you iron it :)! (this indicates never in case you are not paying attention)

12. LENDING YOUR WETSUIT

The thing here is that in case your buddy / girlfriend is not built in the same way you are (but larger), they are going to stretch your wettie and it's going to never ever be as tight as it was (and as it ought to be). 1 session is ok, but a 14 day trip - not.

13. Where TO Change IN AND OUT Of your WETSUIT

- do it under the shower - do it in the changing rooms - find a flat and dirt free surface like grass, telephone booth, hotel carpet - buy a folding wetsuit bag on which you may stand while you're undressing - get a huge plastic basked for all of your soaked stuff and undress in it etc...

14. RINGS, WATCHES, FINGERNAILS...

These may also harm the outer fabric in some wetsuits so be cautious.

15. DRYCLEANING Also not a very good idea.
