Profile of Oliver Townend, International 3 Day Event Rider

Oliver Townend is a popular european 3 day event rider that has achieved the standing of an icon in the event. He is 28 years old but success has not come simply. It is the result of tough work, some trouble and perseverance.

Oliver's folks instilled the love of horses in him from a very young age. His father was a Huddersfield milkman who competed in 3-day eventing at Burghley. His mum showed side saddle at county level. He started riding horses when he was seven years in age. His first win was at the age of eleven at the Horse of the Year Show. At the age of thirteen he was chosen as a member of Britain's pony eventing team at the European Championships. He participated in show jumping with several victories.

Oliver left school at the age of sixteen and worked as a stable jockey for British Team Trainer Kenneth Clawson for 3 years in Leicestershire. He set up on his very own at Lubenham Lodge, Leicestershire with very little money. 2 years after, he acquired his own stables in Duddleston Heath near Ellesmere, Shropshire, where he still resides. At the time he had no horses, no vehicle and no horse-box. He has ridden up the ladder slowly and he's had to sell some of his best horses along the way.

His first notable placement was finishing 12 th at the Hon William Russell's Topping at Badminton in 2005 which earned him an individual placement at the EU Championships that very same year in Blenheim. Oliver started riding Flint Curtis in 2006. He earned third place art Badminton. He remained on the British Squad riding as an individual at Aachen WEG. He earned his first team place and a gold gong at the European Championships in Pratoni in 2007. In 2007 he competed five horses around Burnham Market's advanced track after winning his gold medal and achieved 1886 British Eventing points.

2009 was another successful and winning year for Oliver. He won the first 4 Star CCI**** at Badminton with his horse Flint Curtis. He also won Burghley CCI**** with his horse Carousel Quest. He's one of few riders to have won back to back Badminton and Burghley titles. He finished the season at the top of the British Eventing points table. Oliver finished the 2011 season 3rd in the British Eventing Rider Rankings with 1562 points. His next aspiration is the London Olympic Games in 2012.

Since rising to the top, he presently has a number of sponsors, 45 horses and a staff of 8 at his farm. The staff includes his mother and father. He also markets several product lines including equestrian clothing and horse riding tack with the Townend brand.
