The Everton's Toffee Lady Tradition

By Phil Smith

From the city of Liverpool is another football team, known as the Everton Football Club. The team was formed in 1878 at St Domingo by the Football League in 1888 and has won their first Premier League football shirts in the league championship two seasons after.

Winning two league championships and an FA Cup, Everton football team experienced a lull in the immediate post World War Two period until a revival in the 1960s, following four league titles and two FA Cup wins.

In 1925 the club signed Dixie Dean who, in 1927â€"28, set the record for league goals in a single season with 60 goals in 39 league games, a record that still stands to this day.Dean helped Everton to achieve their third league title.

The club's home Football football shirt colours have traditionally been royal blue and white, with notable footballers donning the Everton shirt.During the first decades, Everton had several different kit colours. The team originally played in white and then blue and white stripes, but as new players arrived, the club wore their old team's shirts during matches, confusion soon ensued. It was decided that the Everton football shirts would be dyed black, both to save on expenses and to instill a more professional look. The result, however, appeared morbid so a scarlet sash was added. The home kit today remains royal blue shirts, white shorts and white socks although when playing teams away who also wear white shorts Everton typically wear all blue.Everton's goalkeepers will wear a camouflage green shirt with green shorts and socks at home and all black away.

The team is widely known as The Toffees or The Toffeemen for their nickname.Several explanations were heard of how the name was adopted, the most well known being that there was a business in Everton village, between Everton Brow and Brow Side, named Mother Noblett's, a toffee shop, which advertised and sold sweets, including the Everton Mint.

“The Toffee Lady tradition” in which a girl walks around the perimeter of the pitch before the start of a game tossing free Everton Mints into the crowd, is a team's tradition and symbolises the connection.

In the Premier League in the 2008â€"09 season, Everton national football team have a large fan base with the eighth highest average attendance .Many travelers from North Wales and Ireland is also a fans of Everton.Everton also have many supporters' worldwide such as North America, Singapore, Norway, Lebanon, Malaysia , Thailand, and Australia. There are also several fanzines including When Skies are Grey and Speke from the Harbour, which are sold around Goodison Park on match days and the official supporters club is Evertonia.
