America's Greatest Films About The Sport Of Baseball

By James Charles

Baseball films are a different breed. While Football movies usually serve more of an inspirational purpose, baseball films usually have more of a comedic presence, or find a way to hone in on the nature of the game and why Americans love it so much.

While there are a lot of junk films involving the sport of baseball, there are certainly some which are worth seeing. The following are my favorite baseball films of all time.

One film about baseball that I love is The Scout, featuring a young Brendan Frasier as a prodigal player who can pitch like it's his job (it is) and hit balls out of the park with the best of them. Albert Brooks stars in this film as the scout who discovers this talent.

While the original Major League film set the precedent, Major League 3 remains my favorite in this series of baseball movies. This is one of Charlie Sheen's best roles and any time this movie is on, I feel the need to watch it in its entirety.

The original Bad News Bears is another one that has to make my list. Walter Matthau plays the iconic Coach Buttermaker, and this movie is a great watch for the whole family.

While it did not receive release in theaters, The Bronx Is Burning is definitely worth checking out. This film covers the controversy surrounding Reggie Jackson and the Yankees in general during the 1977 season.

Rookie Of The Year is another film that must be on my list. This tells the fictional, yet entertaining, story of a young boy who has a freak accident resulting in him having quite the nasty pitch. Gary Busey stars in this film, and this is a great watch for you and your children.

Hopefully there are some movies on this list that you have yet to see. Trust me, they are all worth checking out.
