Find Melbourne Accommodation Tennis Options, Short Walk From Melbourne Park

By Jasmine Zahara

The first Grand Slam tennis tournament of the calendar year is the Australian Open. This competition, "The Grand Slam of Asia/Pacific" is held every January (summer in Australia) at Melbourne Park Tennis Centre, in the state of Victoria. The most recent singles winners (2010) were Roger Federer of Switzerland in the Mens' Singles, and Serena Williams (USA) in the Womens' competition. This short Melbourne accommodation tennis article examines some hotels in the city which are within easy walking distance of the tennis centre. As the Melbourne Cricket Ground is also near, these hotels might also be considered by cricket fans.

The Australian Open is played at Melbourne Park Tennis Centre in Batman Avenue, just to the south east of Melbourne's Central Business District. One hotel just beyond the city centre end of Batman Avenue is the 4.5 star Medina Executive in Flinders Street. This is just under 700 metres from the Tennis Centre.

The Medina Executive is a 17 storey building with four levels of secured car parking. As well as being within easy walking distance of the Melbourne Park Tennis Centre, it is also just a short walk from the Melbourne Cricket Ground and two minutes walk from Federation Square in the city centre.

The Medina offers self contained apartments with one, two or three bedrooms. Apartments have good views, either across the Melbourne cityscape, or across the river and the bay. Rooms at the Medina Executive all have satellite TV, and there is a gymnasium available for the use of guests.

The Medina Executive is in an area of town with some of Melbourne's top restaurants and best theatres. Nearby restaurants include the Press Club, Fifteen and Movida. The Circle Tram line runs just past the Medina, and it is just a short ride to some other Melbourne sights such as the Queen Vic market, and Docklands.

Advance bookings can be made at the Medina Executive by using online specialist websites for hotel bookings in Australia and New Zealand. Given its proximity to Melbourne Park Tennis Centre, and Melbourne Cricket Ground, it as advisable to book well in advance during major sports events.

The Hotel Lindrum is another good spot for sports fans. It is quite close to the Medina (also on Flinders Street). The Lindrum is a four star establishment, with 59 rooms and suites. All rooms have satellite TV, broadband internet and CD/DVD players. The hotel's restaurant serves full breakfast, and rooms have tea/coffee making facilities.

As well as being convenient for tennis and cricket fans, both these Melbourne hotels are within easy reach of the Crown Casino and Entertainment Complex on Melbourne's Southbank Promenade, which is just across the St. Kilda Road bridge from Flinders Street. The Crown Casino complex was opened just over ten years ago, as part of the urban renewal project which transformed the Southbank Area.

There are three hotels in the Crown Complex, the Crown Towers, the Crown Metropol and the Crown Promenade, but the largest business there is of course the Crown Casino. With over 300 gaming tables, and over 2000 machines this is in fact the largest casino in the Southern Hemisphere. The Crown complex also hosts many food outlets, shops and bars, including some well known top designer shops such as Prada, Versace and Louis Vuitton.
