The Grappling Dummy: Should It Be Used For MMA Training?

By Sensei Kim Dunkin

Should you wrestle with a grappling dummy? I think so. It teaches you conditioning, you can work on throws and it increase your strength. I think it is a great training tool for MMA.

Doing solo exercises on the grappling dummy will further your MMA game. It is a great training partner. Since we are designed to wrestle as opposed to strike, we can practice striking while on the ground. As forms are to Karate, so the grappling dummy is to MMA. You can practice with no one around.

There are numerous skills that the dummy teachers. Precision, enhanced cardio, and stamina are a few. How is this you ask? Just look at a common and traditional arm bar drill for the answer.

Imagine getting 100 reps of a spinning arm bar lock during one practice session. Impossible? Not with the dummy. You can role these out and get your cardio too. Plus look at your confidence and precision after 100 arm bar locks. Does that sound like too many? Well this is a way to get your cardio in and work on that all important arm bar lock.

Now, you still are going to need a training partner. But when you get in the ring with him, you'll have a new arsenal. Working with the dummy will help your success. It will enhance conditioning and of course your technical game.

Most of the dummies out there have good ratings, but do check. You want to be sure you get your grappling dummy from a reputable source. There are some out there that do not cut it.

You want to look at material, vinyl or leather. Leather is the most durable and lasts through more workouts. Vinyl is much cheaper, and certainly handles some long hard workouts. Your budget will probably ultimately make this decision. Both bags are good.

Do not worry that some pros are not using the dummy. They have many more resources and much more time. It is a valuable use of your time.
