Do You Need To Stretch For MMA?

Flexibility as a training in MMA is not addressed often enough. In fact, it is often overlooked in importance. Most MMA practitioners focus more on the arts that comprise MMA instead.

But if you want to develop and enhance your MMA skills to the highest level, the fact is that you must be flexible. If you can only kick-lift your feet to the point the reach slightly above your waist, how can you deliver a head kick? You would certainly be limited in mobility and unable to perform to your desired level.

Clearly you would not be able to deliver and would certainly not be getting the most out of your performance. That is why the need to increase flexibility is so very vital.

No one likes to be constrained. When you are constrained, you cannot perform your best and you are limited. Learning to be flexible will free those restraints.

If you are striving to be a top athlete, it would be very smart to expand your attributes in every way possible. One of the best, most effective ways you can do this is to improve your flexibility. It's a simple concept but one that is all too often ignored.

Mobility is of utmost importance when it comes to MMA. Flexibility assists you in that area as well. If you are going to be mobile on the ground, you must be flexible. Much emphasis is placed on bridging, exploding and other performance driven movements, but the skill of flexibility remains neglected.

So little time is spent on flexibility for grappling but that is a grave mistake. A wider range of flexibility will enable you to perform to your fullest on the ground in ways you cannot attain otherwise.

When you are more flexible, your performance will be at a more optimal level and your athletic skills will be at their best. Flexibility matters!

It is said that "The more time you spend stretching, the less time you spend injured." How true! When you are flexible you run much less risk of potentially serious injuries and that is vitally important in all sports but certainly in MMA.

Would it not be wiser to invest quality time with flexibility enhancing exercises than to risk injury and face time off for that. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," is a very true adage. Commit to prevent.

Another bad thing about injuries is that often you come back with limitations from the injury that may even last a lifetime. You may never be the same. Boosting flexibility will help you to prevent injuries and other hardships that can result from them.

Does increasing flexibility mean you have to spend hours a day working on it?

The answer is "no", you do not. Taking a few minutes a day to stretch will actually produce significant results. Even one one-hour Yoga class done consistently over a period of time will help you attain positive changes. You do not have to go all out to see benefits.
