Useful And Essential Facts About Gator Hunts

By Susan Meyer

In the USA, alligator hunting was once practiced unregulated for many years and this led to near-extinction of the American alligator. However, in the 1960s the government had to ban the practice. After, 1960s, gator populations began to flourish once more. The population flourished so fast that gators became a threat to human settlements. That led to the ban against hunting being lifted, but measures were put in place to regulate the exercise. Here are facts regarding gator hunts.

Individual states are responsible for regulating alligator hunting today. Hunting can only be done by people who have licenses. Licenses give people authority to engage in the activity without breaking the law. Having a hunting education certificate is an extra measure that some people take. The certificate offers ability and independence to the hunter in their hunting activities. Gators are dangerous and inexperienced hunters may not be allowed to hunt them.

Hunting on private properties requires one to obtain permission from the owner. Hunting on private property without consent is unlawful. The landowner can press charges of trespassing if they choose to. In case one obtains consent, the landowner may specify which parts of the property one can hunt in.

A hunter may decide to operate alone or join a hunting party. A hunting party is made of a group of hunters who share a common goal. The party may consist only of members from a given state or locality. There are many advantages of joining such a party. For instance, there is a high likelihood of catching an alligator when one operates within a group.

Labeling the alligator after a kill is necessary in most states. Labeling helps with identification. The label must stay on the carcass until it is processed. Labeling is however not a requirement in all states. The label contains many pieces of information about the hunter and the animal itself.

Surveying the area should be the first step to take before one begins to hunt. The geography of the location can be best understood through surveying the area. Scouting also enables the hunter to identify areas where there are possibilities of finding gators. This allows one to save time during the actual hunt.

Some people do the hunting for purposes of obtaining meat from gators. Gator meat is known for its sweetness. Some hotels even serve alligator meat to guests. Such a dish can be very expensive, especially in high-end hotels and other establishments. The alligator is one of the few reptiles whose meat is consumed at least on a global perspective.

How easy it is to hunt and catch an alligator is dependent on the level of experience one has. Having experience makes the exercise easier and more successful. Experience allows one to be able to follow trails and study terrains better. Another factor that can influence success is the kind of equipment one uses. Experienced hunters understand what equipment to use to be more successful. They also know how to use equipment better.
