Choosing A Leash For Surf Boards

By Amy Ward

Surfing is one of the hardest ocean activity to get a grip of however when one gets to understand and knows how to really balance on the board, it can be the best hobby to do. There is something about playing along with the waves that makes people happy and excited of. Maybe that is due to the way it lit excitement and other overflowing feeling rush that feels cool all at once. However, surfing is not easy to learn without having to choose the proper equipment to be used on the process and that marks the importance of the surfboard leash.

The leash is basically the thick thread that is attached at the end of the board and is being tied on the ankle of the surfer. Having this has two basic purpose, first is to promote safety for the surfers. Then, the next one is making sure that their surfboard are not going to be swept away with the wipe outs that can come along the way.

There are so many leash one can possibly choose from but there is no guarantee that all are exactly the same of quality unless checked. That is where all the consideration is needed to get done and practiced. Surfers would never want to put their lives at risk just because they have chosen the wrong types of leash.

The first part they have to check and consider is the cuff. Nowadays, these have quite high standard and they may have hard time in choosing the one they think is perfect. Try to have something which is double around Velcro type of cuff because that one adds an extra strength to the connection along with a security in it.

Then try checking on the swivel as well. The leash should have a swivel feature on it so that it can add up on the great surfing experience. This basically is what allows every surfer to move freely even if their foot are tied on the other end of the board. That as well gives them the best control during wipeouts.

Then they have to choose a cord which is durable enough. Something that hold them together even after a nasty wipeout. One of the material for cord which is so durable would be the polyurethane. Try looking for one that is made of that material.

Length is something that surfers may normally forget when choosing their leash but they have to choose one with ample length. This also is supposed to give them the freedom to move safely. The longer it is, the suitable it gets and the safer their ankles in position would be.

Next to that is its thickness. There are two types of leash length and they have something to do with how its supposed to be used. The first classification are for competition leashes which is kind of a notch thicker than the other which is for regular usage only.

One should know when to use the right classification so that they get the best out of their surfing activity each and every time. For the first time pickers of leash, try asking for help from those who have been into surfing for quite some time. They do have their own criteria in choosing and you can expect that it is the best.
