The Aoudad is a group of wild sheep that may be a species of goats and antelopes. They are also referred to as Barbary sheep. This is a rare kind of animal and the first of its kind as found in the rocky mountain of North Africa. Later some were found in North America and south Europe. It has been assigned names such as Waddan, Arui or Arruis by the different types of people worldwide. The activity of aoudad hunting has been ongoing for long.

The sheep is very huge in appearance compare to normal sheep. They exist in sand-brown color which begins to darken as they grow older. They have a slightly lighter color under their bellies and a darker line along the back. The outer regions of the limbs have a uniform red-brown or gray-brown color.

The practice of trapping or killing aoudads is what is called hunting aoudads. People engage in this practice mostly to obtain food or for recreational purposes. Before humans became a major threat to these animals, major predators included lions and leopards. The population of Barbary sheep has dwindled a lot recently due to excessive hunting and competition for food with other animals.

This led to introduction of rules and guidelines concerning the hunting of the barbary sheep. Before one is authorized to conduct this exercise, they need to be licensed. They are also required to hunt only one barbary sheep not more than one. The arms used should also be the required type and they should be licensed. They can only hunt in specific areas provided for in the guide.

Hunting a Barbary sheep is not a very simple task as many people may want to imagine. As such, being fit is a major requirement. The process is very tedious, involving climbing a vast range of terrains and as such, being physically fit is important. Being a good spotter is also another important requirement because the animals need to be spotted and shot at. It is important to learn certain aspects about the animal first. For instance, one needs to know where they drink water, where they live, and where they find food.

Hunters should dress appropriately for the expedition to protect themselves from the harsh landscape they are to cover. The hunters should be skilled and accurate with their aim and shooting so as to prevent the animals from escaping and running away. The Barbary sheep are hunted by spot and stalk.

The Barbary sheep are rare to find becoming quite a challenge for the hunters in tracking them down. The hunters therefore should have adequate source of information about their prey, their cycle so as not to miscalculate and end up not getting any hunt for the day. This information can be obtained from magazines and TV channels.

Aoudads are classified as big game. When hunting them, one gets the chance to experience the beautiful outdoor environment. Dishes made from their meat are usually very delicious. The adventure is usually worth the trouble. Everyone should make it their goal to have the adventure at least once in their lifetime.
