Why So Many People Are Interested In Hunting News

By Laura Ward

For many people just the prospect of a hunt brings a glint to their eyes. They love the outdoors and they love the challenge of the hunt. But not everybody agrees with them. This sport is under siege and has many critics. Hunters do not see what the fuss is all about. They describe themselves as serious conservationists. One thing is certain and that is that this sport is still extremely popular. One only have to look at the hunting news to realize what a big industry this is.

There is no shortage of critics of hunters. They are of the opinion that stalking and killing animals is a barbarous pastime that should be banned. They day that hunters are decimating the environment, that they care nothing for the preservation of wildlife and that they are violent in nature. These critics go to great lengths to spread their message and they do their level best to introduce stricter laws.

Many critics cite the fact that modern technology gives hunters an unfair advantage. To hunt used to mean that there is a fair chase. This is no longer the case, says those against the practice. Hunters now use sophisticated technology, they use vehicles to track their prey and they kill from long distances away. Not fair, they say. The game has got no chance.

Hunters, on the other hand, day that they are true conservationists. The love and respect nature and they understand the need to protect the environment. They say that industry is the one to blame for the destruction of the environment. Developers and industrialists keep destroying natural habitats to make space for their latest ventures and they are the ones responsible for polluting the water, air and soil.

Hunters, especially trophy hunters like to point out that they make a huge contribution towards nature conservation. A big game trophy hunt in South Africa, Botswana or Namibia, for example can cost upwards of half a million dollars. A good percentage of that fee is ploughed back in nature conservation. This is done to protect the hunting industry.

Many land owners focus on the breeding of game. Hunters are quick to point out that the farming of game is no different from the farming of poultry, pigs or cattle. The game is cultivated and protected until they are ready for consumption, just as other consumer meat products are. What is the difference, game farmers ask. At least their animals are not confined to cruel pens and force fed.

Statistics show that licensed hunters are very seldom involved in shooting accidents and almost never in crimes where firearms were used. Hunters say that they take their sport seriously and that they act in a responsible manner. Hunting is very strictly regulated and no reputable hunter will just for the fun of it.

There are arguments for and against hunting but it does not seem as if there will ever be a cease fire. Hunter will continue to enjoy their sport and those against it will continue to fight it. Hunters do, however, make a sizeable contribution towards the economy, especially when they hunt in developing countries.
