Training For MMA? Consider Taking The Following Classes

By Rod Bourgoine

Obviously, if you want to become an MMA fighter or train in mixed martial arts, you realize this takes a great deal of commitment and hard work. You also know that you need to take a variety of classes in order to become a well-rounded fighter. In addition to taking Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes, Muay Thai classes, Judo classes or other classes that teach a specific martial art, there are some other classes you should consider adding to your training regime.

While some MMA fighters want to stick only with martial arts, it is much wiser to at least take some boxing classes. Boxing instruction is the best way to learn how to throw punches and often more importantly to learn how to avoid being punched or kicked and how to take or absorb a blow without letting it take you down. In addition, improvements in hand-eye coordination and your overall footwork will be improved through your boxing classes.

Many MMA fighters got their start in wrestling, so it can be wise to take a few wrestling classes. Some people even believe that wrestling is one of the best bases from which to build a career in MMA. This is because wrestling teaches many important fundamental skills that are easily transferable into MMA. While Jiu-Jitsu and Judo can help you learn how to get an opponent to the ground and lock them up, wrestling improves your overall brute force. Wrestlers are strong, and if you mix your wrestling skills with some powerful boxing skills, you can get an opponent on the ground and then hold them in place and deliver some powerful blows.

In addition to boxing, wrestling and martial arts, taking strength training or conditioning classes is a big must. After all, it is these types of classes that will improve your overall fitness level as well as your level of endurance, making it easier for you to overcome an opponent. If possible, it is always best to find an MMA gym where these strength training classes are offered along with an assortment of other classes including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, wrestling, boxing and more. You'll also want to find a gym with a flat monthly fee that allows you to take as many different classes as you want.

While you might posses a good variety of skills, learning how to merge them all together for MMA fighting is also an essential skill. So select an MMA gym that offers MMA classes. You will be matched with other fighters according to individual abilities, and getting out there and fighting is really the best way to improve your skills in general. Select a gym where the instructors and students seem to be working hard but also having fun. It might be tough work, but it also should be something you really enjoy doing.

There are few interesting types of classes that have been developed in the last few years that you also might consider taking a look at. CrossFit and also FightBuilt classes can be an excellent way to improve your overall strength and fitness. CrossFit was designed to increase fitness in many different areas, including cardiovascular strength, agility, balance, stamina, flexibility and several other key areas. FightBuilt was developed by The Arena, a San Diego MMA gym, and this program is geared specifically toward MMA fighters, although you don't have to be a fighter in order to try out a FightBuilt class.
