Since a knife is a cutting tool, a person not knowing what a pocket knife does would think that it's a tool used to cut pockets. As this is well known, you will most likely hear a laugh and a "no" followed by some explanation of what this really is. Swiss Army pocket knives are usually red with a cross and a shield as the logo imprinted on the side of the handle. This help users remember about Switzerland since the Swiss Army pocket knife originated from Ibach Shwyz, Switzerland.

"Swiss Army" are officially used by Wenger and Victorinox since these two companies are the official providers of pocket knives to the Swiss Army.

Whilst the term "Swiss Army was used by both Wenger and Victorinox, the whole phrase "Swiss Army knife" was made famous by the US Army. This term is now used worldwide to refer to pocket knives associated with quality tools that has multiple uses.

Swiss Army knife is such a breakthrough tool making one think how was it developed. Credit is given to a man named Karl Elsener who wanted to make a knife that can be distinctively Swiss because pocket knives were originally from Germany.

Karl Elsener designed the Swiss knife as one having a packet like handle allowing it to fit other tools like cutting blade and corkscrew. This was to make it more appealing and different from Germany's pocket knives. He then created the cross and shield logo and marked the rise of the Swiss Army knife.

As time passes the Swiss Army knife goes with the changes through its series of modifications. At present Swiss Army knives are available in different styles and include various tools according to the customer's preference and lifestyle.
