How Obstacle Events Can Include Swimming

By Rob Sutter

When it comes to competitive events, I don't think that there are many which I can call myself a master at. I enjoy being competitive and races are one of the many things that I like to invest time in. It's just that I understand my limits and how there are others who may be better than me in certain scenarios. Obstacle events have plenty of said scenarios in which I may be bested but I still think that I can do well when it comes to swimming.

Swimming is one of my favorite activities when the weather gets warm and I believe the fact that I did it so much as a child helps. I used to love being able to have access to a pool, whether I used the one at home or the public one which was at a park only a couple of blocks away. The ability to move across the water was something that I wouldn't take for granted. To say the least, swimming is my favorite to take part in and I don't see it being trumped.

When I'm alone and I decide to take a swim, it's normal for me to make the choice not to become terribly active. Some of the most common acts for me involve simply going around in laps until I become bored and that's usually when I start to make dives to improve the ability to hold my breath. If you're talking about strenuous obstacle events, though, I believe that more intense activity is going to be needed. Spartan Race, at least in my mind, stands as one of the toughest.

Swimming may prove to be an even tougher event than anything you can do on land because of how water is by nature. There's an element of strain that seems to be present as you have to utilize endurance to push through one wave after another. It's also important to keep yourself afloat with your legs, which only adds to the amount of work you have to do. I think it takes more of a spirit to get through these kinds of events more than anything else.

Whether it's through leisurely activity or strenuous action, there's no question that I love the water. I feel about as home underwater as a fish and I feel like that comes from many years of having a place where I can hone that ability of mine. If I had the ability to grow gills, you better be certain that I would have taken it up without hesitation. Until humans grow such body parts, I think that I will have to settle for what we have now, which is fine by me.
