Do You Know the Best Tips for Cold-Weather Skin Care?

By Jae Zeigler

There is no such thing as a year-round skin care routine, unless you live in a place where the weather does not change from season to season. For most people, this isn't the case. Therefore, simple skin care procedures have to be adapted to changing weather conditions. With a little trial and error, you can soon have a good skin care routine for each of the seasons. Your skin will then glow and be healthy no matter what the temperature is outside. What are the best techniques for taking care of your skin during the wintertime? Let's take a look at the winter months and see what you can do to protect your skin when it's cold outside.

Invest in a good humidifier. The cold weather of winter is more drying than the humid, moist conditions you find in the summertime. If you add the drying effects of heaters - both space and central - you can see that dry skin can be a problem It's pleasant to have the warm air from your heater throughout your home, but it will cause you many problems due to its drying effect on your skin. When you use a humidifier you reintroduce moisture into the air which can help even things out while allowing you to stay warm. Many people actually have more than one humidifier so that they cover all the rooms of their home. You will then benefit by the warmth of your heating system without sacrificing the moisture of your skin.

A very vulnerable area, that is almost always exposed, are your lips. They can get dry, chapped and even crack. Make a special effort to give your lips the protection they need. Always wear a chap stick, or lip balm, during the winter. Don't fall into the habit of "moisturizing" your lips by licking them. It doesn't work. When you go outside in the wintertime, you may normally wear a scarf. If you do, wrap it up high so it covers your lips. A nice scarf can offer protection to your nose, also, not just your lips and neck.

Shed those wet clothes as soon as you can! Wet clothing, particularly gloves and socks, can really irritate your skin. It can cause itching, cracking, sores or even an eczema outbreak. Unfortunately, when the weather is wet and inclement, wet clothing is an issue that presents itself frequently. Get out of the wet clothing as quickly as possible. Those of you who work may wisely decide to have a change of clothing - or at least dry socks - tucked away somewhere at your work place, or even in a duffle bag in your car. Remember, the goal is to stay warm and dry.

Moisturizers are all similar, but with distinctive qualities. The basic ingredient in one may be that of water and oil in a different one. The type of moisturizer you need is dependent upon what kind of skin you have. For instance, if your skin is oily already; you certainly would not use an oil based moisturizer. If your skin is just dry, the oil based moisturizers might be more your style. During the different seasons, your skin will have requirements that vary. What you need to keep your skin healthy during the summer is different than what you need to keep your skin healthy during the winter. The reason is that in the colder months, the impact on our skin is a lot different than it is during the more temperate months. It is imperative to also keep in mind that you shouldn't just concentrate on your hands and face during the winter months, but concentrate on keeping your whole body protected and hydrated - inside and out. You will easily adapt to these kinds of seasonal routines, so don't let it get you down. You will love your healthy and moist wintertime complexion.
