Big Game Fishing Tackle Will Help You Land The Big Ones

By Edwina Heuser

Blue ocean or big game fishing aims to hook powerful fish with exceptional strength and fight. Prized species include shark, marlin, swordfish and tuna. These formidable specimens can weigh hundreds of kilograms. The sport needs tackle that is strong enough to match the strength of the fish. Purpose-built big game fishing tackle is designed with specifications for the job.

The sport emerged during the late-1890s and developed during the early decades of the twentieth century. Anglers found great pleasure in the sport. It spread rapidly around the world, popularized by a great deal by celebrity afficionados like Ernest Hemingway and, after him, Lee Marvin.

Over the decades, the sport has developed its own range of specially crafted equipment. Perhaps the most critical items are the rod, reel and line. Other important items include hooks, lures, clothing and landing nets. Rods are made from a range of materials including fiberglass to carbon fiber.

Rod designs include composites as well as fully rollered units. The twin objectives are always superior strength with lighter weight. On the rod, special attention is given to the reel seat, guide and the butt grip. There are many equipment manufacturers and an even greater number of models for each line of product.

Big game fish can be attracted using either live bait or a lure. A full range of lures have been designed specially to attract large pelagics like marlin, shark or tuna. Trolling with a lure is a common strategy.

Most angling tournaments use a 16lb (8kg), 20lb (10kg), 30lb (15kg) or 50lb (24kg) line. The largest line classes are 100lb and the mammoth 130lb (65kg). These are suitable for the largest monster from the deep.

Extra wide reels provide the capacity to carry extra line. They also provide increased drag pressure when set to full. These units normally include a W in their name. For example, a Tiagra 30 also comes as a 30W. In addition to allowing a longer line, it also allows the same length of a bigger line. As a result, some anglers like to run 50lb (24kg) line on a 30W model and 27kg on the 50w model.

Open ocean angling is a tough demanding sport. The forces acting on the equipment can be enormous. The gear needs to be carefully crafted to take the strain. Modern technology has been used to ensure big game fishing tackle is up to the task. It is tough to allow tough fish to be hooked and landed.
