Exploring Wild Edrics Way

By Mark Townsend

With a fascinating history, compelling culture and beautiful scenery ranging from the jagged mountains of Snowdonia and the rolling hills of the Welsh Borders to the rugged coastline of Pembrokeshire, Wales offers some of the best walking in Britain. Walking holiday options in Wales include the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, Glyndwr's Way, Wye Valley Walk, Isle of Anglesey Coast Path, Dee Way,Three Castles Walk, Usk Valley Walk and Offa's Dyke Path, a superb coast to coast walk through the border country of England and Wales.

Wild Edric was a Saxon who fought the attempts of William the Conquerer to tame the borderland between lowland Britain and mountainous Wales. This superb walk explores the varied and beautiful scenery of Shropshire's hill country where Wild Edric fought the Normans.

From Church Stretton Wild Edric's Way crosses the heathery plateau of the Long Mynd to the sleepy hamlet of Bridges. It follows the rock-strewn ridge of the Stiperstones past the Devil's Chair, where Edric appears when England is threatened, before descending to the enticing tiny town of Bishop's Castle. From here, the trail follows a medieval drovers ' way and a wonderful section of Offa's Dyke to Clun, an attractive small town controlled by its messed up Norman castle.

The route then heads over the impressive Iron Age hillfort of Bury Ditches to Craven Arms and Stokesay Castle, a novel fortified manor house, before following field and riverside paths to the important town of Ludlow, the Capital city of the Marches. Ludlow, with its superbly saved black-and-white half-timbered buildings clustered underneath a big castle, is among the most picturesque towns in Britain. The castle was a stronghold of the Mortimers, forceful Marcher Lords who were given vast estates along the Marches or Border Country of England and Wales by William the Conquer for defending the frontier.

This 52 mile trail offers a walking check-list that may be covered in 4 to 5 days of walking dependent on your capability. So why don't you check your vacation calendar and make plans to go visit this unique part of the UK. Come and start your adventure by walking Wild Edrics Way.
