Meindl Boots and nice dry feet

By Richard Longjohn

You usually see on television interviews and assessments 'what item of outdoor gear you'd probably advocate to your new recruit to the outdoors'. You usually get the comedy answers, such as toilet paper or a flask of Rum, which I don't specifically argue but it is likely never to assist everyone who are actually interested in a legitimate solution.

Whenever I've been asked this question I've always given the same answer, walking boots. Any outdoor kit list will always state the importance of good walking boots or trekking boots, whether it's for Duke of Edinburgh training, A walking company on holiday or Full on Himalayan expedition. You'll here hundreds of horror stories of people ruining their feet with poor quality and poorly fitting walking boots.

I've met people who have gone through dozens of manufactures in order to find a good fitting walking & hiking boot. I often count myself lucky that the first brand of walking boots I purchased were perfect for my feet and I've never had to search around for alternatives. Meindl was the first brand I was recommended and luckily had a stockist nearby. Meindl walking boots and trekking boots have been hand made in Germany for over 300 years. All their boots are built on a similar last (shape of foot that the boots are built around). This last is fairly generous in its width and the company has become known to have wider fitting boots, than the average. This attribute for the style of boot generally makes them popular with middle aged and upwards age demographic as feet tend to get wider with age. Meindl like to give lots of choices in their range making sizes from sizes down to 3.5 up to size 18 and also making an extra wide range called ' The comfort range''.

The boots I first ordered were called a Meindl Burma pro. I needed them to carry me up Mount Kinabalu in Borneo. The boots needed to be able to deal with warm and cold situations. The reality that the Burma's were a leather and Gore-Tex mix walking boot would guarantee that they would be allowing air through yet solid to damage on the journey. The height of the boots made sure that I had sufficient ankle joint aid yet comfort from day one. The quality was clear from day one and the components used were first-rate as I still have the boots now, more than 10 years on. The Meindl Burma Pro are the most popular walking boot and still get excellent reviews from periodicals such as Trail and The Sunday Times.

My Meindl's were measured appropriately for my own feet and worn with a wonderful sock system that worked well with my boots to keep my feet dried out. This has guaranteed that all the other boots I've obtained since have worked just as well for every diverse natural environment I've needed them for from deserts to High elevation summits. Once you've got the right footwear you can wander anyplace.
