You Should Only Dress Comfortably On Your Alaskan Fishing Trip

By William McCormick

Choosing the right wardrobe for your Alaskan fishing trip is surely one of the most important things on your list. Since the weather in Alaska is known for being unpredictable, it is important that you pack a little of everything, including a weatherproof jacket.

Dressing in layers is the most sensible choice, as you will be prepared for any temperature. Your starting layer should be a T-shirt or some long-sleeve cotton shirt. If the weather happens to be warm, you'll stay cool in the sun, but a little warm in the windier conditions.

The next layer should be something that can keep you warm. Sweatshirts are great. Comfort-fitting sweatshirts are the best. These will need to be shed easily if the weather starts to warm up for you. You'll have your lightweight shirts on underneath, so you'll be ready to go.

Be sure to bring along several comfortable pairs of cotton socks. If you plan to wade around in the water, some might get into your boots and soak your socks, so have plenty of spares on hand. Opt for cotton socks, since they allow your feet to breathe. Take care to bring a raincoat or a poncho, in case it rains, to make sure you stay warm and dry. Rain pants, along with a raincoat, are also helpful. It could also be a good idea to wear hip wader boots.

A good fishing hat is also necessary. A good hat with a visor will protect your head and eyes from harmful sun rays reflected off the water.

There are a few other important things you should think about. Sunglasses are a must. If the weather is sunny, your eyes need to be protected with a good pair of UV blocking sunglasses. Some people even bring two pairs, in case they lose one, but it is not really necessary.

Two other important items you'll want to pack are sunscreen lotion and bug repellent. You'll probably plan to be out fishing for a good portion of the day, so even if the weather is rainy, your skin can still get damaged from the sun. Choose a sunscreen with a high SPF rating which is also waterproof. The bug repellent should have at least 25% DEET.

Some of the lodges provide sunscreen and bug repellent, so check with them before you bring your own. The important thing to remember is to dress in layers so that if the weather gets warmer, you can easily shed the top layer to stay cool.
