A Cross Country Road Trip Is Good For Your Soul

By Randy Q. Logan

Taking a cross country road trip may sound a bit boring, but you'll be amazed to realize what a startling personal revelation can take place. When it's just you, your traveling companions, and the road for days on end, something magical happens. Something that only those that have undergone this experience can explain. Something that you must do at least once.

Driving across the North American continent gives you a particular personal feeling of just big and expansive it really is. Some of the things you will see will absolutely make your jaw drop in astonishment. The vast size of the United States is rarely realized from a first person, hands on point of view.

Another reason to drive across country is you'll develop an incredible relationship with those you are driving with. Many people have come back from the brink, and rediscovered their relationship after taking a long road trip. Even if drive like a madman from sunup to sunset, you'll still need several days behind the wheel.

Amazing things take place as you spend so many days with the same person, facing the open road for hours on end. You may get on each others nerves at first, but you will quickly break through that surface tension and get to the real thing. All the shields will be lowered, and you'll be able to express yourself the way you truly are.

It goes without saying that you'll need to put in some planning ahead of time. If you start off without any solid plans, you could find yourself out of gas in the middle of nowhere. This is neither fun nor enlightening. It would be best to decide which cities you'll be stopping in, or at the very least, which areas you'll be stopping in. That way you won't have to worry about the little things that can destroy an otherwise great trip.

Another thing you'll need to keep in mind is that it is very important to know exactly where you are going, and where all the proper turn-offs are. Having the very latest maps is absolutely essential. That way you won't find yourself driving two hundred miles out of your way because you made a wrong turn. A couple of options are to join Triple A, or simply buy an inexpensive GPS navigation system.
