Why You Should Use Surfboard Socks

By Steven Johnson

Those that enjoy going surfing are quaintly aware of the need to make sure their stuff is protected. Having the board sitting around without any protection, whether it is on the beach or in a garage, leaves it open to minor and more serious damage. There are several ways to provide this needed protection by using surfboard socks and other devices. They cover it to protect it from the sun and dents and dings from being moved around.

There are many different styles available. But, there are just a few basic types that can be used. The sock provides basic protection. Each level up is designed to provide even more and should be used in conjunction with the sock to make sure the adequate level is provided depending on the circumstances, such as traveling to the local beach or hopping on an airplane for longer distances.

Socks are basic and provide the first level of protection. This is like putting on sunscreen. The first level of protection keeps it clean and is exactly how it should be stored. When on the beach it can also keep the sand from caking on to the underside wax build up. Though these can be used for nearby transport it is recommended that you have a second level of protection if the board is going to be sitting in the hot sun for hours.

Bags are the next step up in the evolution. They include padding that keeps the board from being damaged in daily forms. Putting the board in your vehicle for transportation to the beach is a common time when damage occurs. Another time is from being in the sun. Since wax is usually built up on the board to help it slide through the water, the bag, with its padding, helps keep it cool and shaded from the sun so the wax doesn't melt. This is a feature that just the sock will not provide.

Lastly is the coffin. The reason they call it this is due to its size and shape. More than one board can fit inside, so you can have several of your favorites with you as you travel long distances or on airplanes headed to the best beach locations. The boards will also stay cool, but more importantly, they will be safe. You should still keep each board in a sock for added protection.

Designing your own logos and splash is a great way to show off your own brand. It's easy enough to get a corporate sponsor to provide you with a bag or sock that represents their brand, but having one in your own will help get you known and show you're serious about the sport.

It's possible to create your own. The material you use should either be preshrunk or Lycra or other flexible material. You will need access to sewing equipment and some skill in sewing. If it is made with cotton you must make sure you size it correctly. Lycra can stretch a bit, so it's fine to make it a bit snugger.

Knowing how important it is to protect your equipment is the first sign of a serious surfer. The sun, sand, and transportation all provide opportunities for damage. By taking your investment seriously, you can make it last a lot longer and have less maintenance over its life. The bags and coffins are both designed for specific purposes and use. By having the right protection with your own logo, you'll be in the game a lot longer.
