By Dorothy Thompson

Kite surfing is a relatively new sport that has attracted many thrill seekers from all over the world. It is a sport that combines the spectacular nature of windsurfing and sailing with a kite. Kitesurf can be carried out in any place that has ever present wind and shallow sounds with few obstructions for the kites.

Anyone seeking to join in the sport will find that the gear that is used is quite portable. It has been designed this way to allow users to enjoy surfing in any type of wind. As a beginner, it is advisable for you to start surfing when there is a gentle or low wind to reduce the risks. If you are just watching from the shore, it may not be easy to gauge the strength of the wind and the danger you are likely to face when you start surfing. The wind can easily overpower you when it is strong and this is what makes the sport extremely dangerous.

You are required to get some basic level of training before you can join in the fun. This certification must be presented to any shop or seller of the kite surfing equipment. This gives them the assurance that you know how to use the equipment and you understand the risks of the sports. Most of the sellers will not agree to sell or rent out the equipment without proof of the training.

The sport is considered to be high risk and highly rewarding at the same time. Surfers always treat the ocean with respect while at the same time putting safety first before having fun. If you are a risk taker and can picture yourself riding waves on a beautiful beach then consider joining in the fun of this extreme sport.

As part of the training, you will be required to understand the physics of the kite and how to steer it. This is a very important step in kite surfing training. Once you are able to master the skill, the trainers will be comfortable in taking you through the rest of the training. In about 4 hours you should have finished the training and received your basic level certification that will allow you to start kite surfing.

The sport is associated with the freedom to express yourself as you follow the wind while riding the waves. It is important to respect the environment especially the wind and the waters as you jump and skim the waves. The freestyle technique that is the most enjoyed technique allows you to freely express yourself and try out spectacular and complex moves.

In many of the competitions that are held all over the world, competitors are judged by the skills they showcase in front of a group of judges. The freestyle category attracts many competitors who battle it out for the final spot. In the competition, each is given a limited time frame to showcase their moves within the limited area.

Part of the judging criteria checks on the height that the competitors reach as they surf. Points are awarded to competitors who gain maximum height to perform a stunt and impress the judges. The judges also look into the technical difficulty of some of the stunts carried out, the creativity and innovation of the competitors as well as the risk taken. Higher points are awarded to the surfers who show a variety of moves and styles with a lot of power in execution and amplitude.
