Basic Information On Spring Turkey Hunting

Turkeys are big birds native to the American continent and a staple food in Thanksgiving celebrations. Male ones are differentiated by having beards while the female ones do not usually have except for some instances. The males are called gobblers due to the gobbling sound they produce while the hens are unable to do it.

Going on a hunt for them is enjoyable and tricky because of the excellent visions they have which helps them detect approaching danger and run from it. Find a place that you can hunt for them and these locations could be public or private ones. These birds are very populous around the state but there are not that many public area you can do it. Most of these places are on private land where you have to pay for it but it has the advantage of having lesser competition during hunting.

Determine the best day to hunt turkeys in order for you to make proper preparations in advance. The season best for it is during spring because this is also the breeding season of turkeys. You are legally allowed to only kill gobblers so that hens would be able to breed as well as lay eggs for hatching this season. Gobblers could easily be located by the sound they produce to attract hens to them.

You could do a scouting before the season starts so you would know where most gobblers are located. They leave many indications of being in that place such as foot prints and scratching marks when looking for food. It is also advantageous to you if you were able to find their roosting place so you could catch them easily in the morning.

Using calling sounds attract the birds which make them respond and helps in locating the exact location they are in. These are useful in locating one you lost sight of or finding a new one to hunt. These sounds attract them thinking that it came from a member of their flock calling out to them.

There are various types of call sounds, the most common being the sound imitating the one made by hens. These are made in various ways with the use of various devices such as slate, diaphragm and box calls. Study which one you will be needing according to the type of sound you like to make.

Wearing full camouflage during hunting is important as turkeys have excellent visions and can spot things easily. Your whole body must be covered in camouflage including your face with the use of facial paint or wearing mask. Wearing vest is also a must so you can store all the items and gears you have in the many pockets it has.

Set up is important for hunting them in order to distract them and having them stay in one place. Turkeys just leave right away whenever they sense danger so using decoys could help you become unnoticeable to them. There are other set ups you could use but remember to have patience when you hunt for a turkey.
