Tips When Learning Conversational English To Tagalog Speakers

By Tammie Caldwell

It can be observed that there is an increasing number of schools that offer training for foreign languages. Learning conversational English to Tagalog speakers has become an important course for Filipinos who would like to enhance their skills and expand their options. While this is a good option to improve, many Filipinos already know how to speak the language since it has been used as the method of instruction in schools for many decades. There are several ways to learn.

Although quite old, books are still great as sources of information on languages. The technicalities of grammar are best learned from a well-detailed book with explanations and examples. Books on grammar are found in schools, libraries and bookstores. Some of them are even offered as electronic books, thus making them even more portable than before. So the person can just download the book on his handheld device and study during his free time at school or at work.

While driving or commuting to work, people may listen to audio recordings. This is especially great for auditory learners who find it difficult to study using printed materials alone. The recordings will initially ask the person to repeat commonly-used phrases. Later, they will be asked conversational questions, which they will need to answer with a personalized response. For a more effective audio learning, the accompanying printed materials may also be used.

Watching films may also be used as a way to learn a new language. If the learner is not interacting with a native speaker yet, this will expose him to the use of the phrases in the cultural context of the movie. A movie with subtitles is even better since words can be read and will be understood better by the learner. This becomes both a learning and an entertaining experience.

A pocket dictionary is also helpful for a learner who would like to communicate with locals, yet they do not possess enough language skills yet. This will be like their stash of weapons in case they would like to express themselves and do not know the right word. Also, some native speakers will mention certain words, which the learner will have to look up in the dictionary. It is great if the person spends on a Filipino-English dictionary. As he becomes a better speaker, he may need to invest in a more comprehensive dictionary.

It has been said that one of the best ways to learn is through practice. One way to practice is to interact with other learners of the language. This way, people are less judgmental. Also, they get to share tips and references with one another. Certain groups have been created for this. Membership fee may just be minimal, or even free.

Hiring a tutor helps someone who want guidance on using the language. The teacher will be there to point out areas for improvement and also train the person with the proper accent. While also effective, this method of learning is the most expensive of all those mentioned.

These various methods are not exclusive of one another, and may be used in combination as preferred. The only requirement is that the student remains diligent and continues to practice the language whenever applicable. In time, he will acquire this as a skill, which he will subconsciously use.
