A Good Spacewar Game On The Internet

By Yvonne X. Valentine

One of the earliest space war games on the web is a digital computer game titled Spacewar! The game play involves two players, each player owning a spaceship with the goal to obliterate the others space ship. A large star in the center on the screen pulls both ships into the pit, requiring that both players possess a great quantity of maneuvering skills to avoid it. Whenever a player is placed in a difficult position, they are allowed to use a feature called hyperspace which returns the player to a random place on the screen with the option of blowing up if placed in a bad place.

A large amount of online space war games have used the basis of Spacewar as an inspiration since it had been released years ago. Some even share the same name only with restructured gameplay. Specific features are added to some that can be exact clones, such as varied levels of acceleration, being affected by gravity, varied levels of gravity, missiles that are affected by the amount of gravity presents, and regeneration with time.

In 1971, the mall version of Spacewar was released as the Galaxy Game, Computer Space, and Space Wars by Cinematronics in 1977. The mainly victorious of all of the above was Cinematronics. 1974 was when Silas Warner released the first networked version titled Orbit War. Big Board was additional to Orbit War, which is a hub where other players would wait for opponents to battle against with all the game play of the original.

The Star Control series, one of the most elaborate of computer and console versions of the game, introduced a vast variety of frameworks for game play around necessary player vs. player combat system. Senko no Ronde is a modern interpretation of the original Spacewar game, basing its fighting and combat style off of the fighting styles located in the versus section of Street Fighter II. Spacewar was also an inspiration for the Escape Velocity series based on its battle style and 2D inertial navigation system.

Combat by Atari and Tank by Kee Games are games that are not set in a space like environment but has all the features of the original Spacewar game. Both players would be able to control a vehicle with the same controls and aim to score by striking their foe with a missile. Space Travel is a game that was the main basis for the development of the UNIX system, even though Spacewar is often mistaken to actually be the inspiration for creating UNIX by the UNIX directors.
